Downtown Portland

The Portland Metro region is world-renowned for its unique character, diverse business base and friendly and outgoing residents.

Nicknamed the “Silicon Forest,” the region is the home to a number of technology companies, such as Intel, Lattice and Tripwire. Portland institution Powell’s Bookstore is the biggest independent bookstore in the world. And Oregon-born Nike and Columbia Sportswear are based in Beaverton and Portland, respectively. Portland is also well known for its locally made microbrews, and has more breweries than any city in the country.

Portland (nicknamed the “Rose City”, “Stumptown”, “Bridgetown”, or “Rip City” by residents) has a number of very popular sports franchises. The city is home to the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers, the MLS' Timbers, and the major junior hockey team, the Winterhawks.

Portland is growing steadily each year, with many new residents attracted by its thriving arts and music scene. Art in the Pearl hosts over 100 artists showcasing sculpture, paintings, jewelry and photography. There is no shortage of music festivals held in Portland, from the Waterfront Blues Festival to Musicfest NW which features local and national artists from various music genres.

The city’s diverse geography also makes the region a premiere destination for lovers of the outdoors. The Willamette River cuts through the heart of the city and is traversed by a number of historic bridges, while nearby Mt. Hood makes an appearance on clear days. Portland has multiple public transportation systems and is a very bike friendly city. The Portland Metro region is also the home of the largest urban forest reserve in the country. Forest Park, a hiker’s paradise, covers 5,000 acres and has over 70 miles of hiking trails.
