{"id":1807,"date":"2022-12-23T11:43:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-23T16:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/new-government-funding-package-includes-historic-step-forward-for-pregnant-workers-new-mothers\/"},"modified":"2023-07-24T11:04:37","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T15:04:37","slug":"new-government-funding-package-includes-historic-step-forward-for-pregnant-workers-new-mothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/new-government-funding-package-includes-historic-step-forward-for-pregnant-workers-new-mothers\/","title":{"rendered":"El nuevo paquete de financiaci\u00f3n del gobierno incluye un &quot;paso hist\u00f3rico&quot; para las trabajadoras embarazadas y las nuevas madres"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Two bills to provide additional protections for pregnant<br \/>\nworkers and breastfeeding people were included in the $1.7 trillion federal<br \/>\ngovernment spending package passed by Congress this week.<\/li>\n<li>The changes are a &#8220;monumental and historic step<br \/>\nforward&#8221; that will make a huge difference for low-income workers,<br \/>\nparticularly women of color, one advocate says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mothers and moms-to-be are poised to get new workplace<br \/>\nprotections, thanks to two amendments included in the $1.7 trillion federal<br \/>\ngovernment spending package that Congress on Friday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/23\/us-house-passes-1point7-trillion-bill-to-fund-government-through-september-sending-it-to-bidens-desk-.html\">enviado<br \/>\nto President Joe Biden<\/a>&nbsp;for his signature.<\/p>\n<p>That includes the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/03\/bipartisan-bill-would-make-it-easier-for-pregnant-women-to-keep-working.html\">Pregnant<br \/>\nWorkers Fairness Act<\/a>, which will require employers to make temporary and<br \/>\nreasonable accommodations for pregnant workers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pregnancy should never be a barrier for women who want<br \/>\nto stay in the workplace,&#8221; Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., one of the leaders<br \/>\nbehind the proposal,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.casey.senate.gov\/news\/releases\/casey-cassidy-bill-to-protect-pregnant-workers-in-the-workplace-passes-senate\">dijo en un comunicado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This legislation would provide commonsense protections<br \/>\nfor pregnant workers, like extra bathroom breaks or a stool for workers who<br \/>\nstand, so they can continue working while not putting extra strain on their<br \/>\npregnancies,&#8221; Casey said.<\/p>\n<p>Casey first introduced the proposal in 2012. The bipartisan<br \/>\nbill was also led by Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate amendment to add the bill to the spending package<br \/>\npassed on Thursday with a 73-24 vote. The proposal was passed by the House of<br \/>\nRepresentatives in May 2021. The House passed the larger package to fund the<br \/>\nfederal government on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is one of the<br \/>\nbiggest pieces of civil rights and workplace protection legislation to pass in<br \/>\nover a decade,&#8221; said Sarah Brafman, national policy director at A Better<br \/>\nBalance, a nonprofit advocacy organization focused on workers&#8217; rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a monumental and historic step forward for<br \/>\npregnant and post-partum workers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><b>New protections for working women &#8216;in the shadows&#8217;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The change would provide protections for many women &#8220;in<br \/>\nthe shadows&#8221; who would share with advocates stories of what happened to<br \/>\nthem, Brafman said. That includes pregnant workers who asked for light duty who<br \/>\nwere then pushed out of their jobs, women who asked for schedule accommodations<br \/>\ndue to morning sickness who were refused their requests and female cashiers who<br \/>\nasked for a chair to sit on who were told instead to come back after they gave<br \/>\nbirth and later found their positions had been filled.<\/p>\n<p>The issue disproportionately affects low-income workers &#8211;<br \/>\nparticularly women of color &#8211; in low-wage, physically demanding jobs, Brafman<br \/>\ndicho.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate also on Thursday passed an amendment with a 92-5<br \/>\nvote to include the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections (PUMP) for Nursing<br \/>\nMothers Act in the government funding bill.<\/p>\n<p>That proposal, which would protect a worker&#8217;s right to<br \/>\nbreastfeed in the workplace, also had bipartisan backing in the chamber through<br \/>\nleaders including Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bipartisan effort looks to require companies to provide<br \/>\naccommodation for pregnant women at work<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The bill expands on a 2010 law that requires employers to<br \/>\nallow for time and space for mothers to pump and store breast milk at work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must make it possible for every new mom returning<br \/>\nto the workplace to have the option to continue breastfeeding,&#8221;<br \/>\nmerkley&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/press\/release\/merkley-murkowski-bill-expanding-breastfeeding-protections-for-workers-poised-to-become-law-\">dijo en un comunicado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That 2010 law excluded protections for nearly 9 million<br \/>\nwomen of child-bearing age, according to Brafman.
