Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, with U.S. Senator Ron Wyden and U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Val Hoyle (OR-04), Andrea Salinas (OR-06), and\u202fLori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05),\u202fannounced\u202ftoday\u202fthe U.S. Department of Commerce\u202fis sending Oregon\u202fa total of $7,050,722 for the fishery disaster declared for 2018, 2019, and 2020\u202fOregon\u202fChinook salmon\u202focean commercial\u202ffisheries in the state.\u202fThe Oregon delegation\u202ffirst announced<\/a>\u202fthe determination in October 2023,\u202fand the federal funding\u202fdistribution\u202fwas announced this week to\u202fsupport the state\u2019s fisheries, industries, subsistence users, and fishing communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u202fdetermination, championed by the Oregon delegation, makes local\u202ffishermen eligible to apply for reimbursement from the over $7 million in disaster assistance funding available\u202ffrom the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This will help the state\u2019s coastal economies recover from years of drought, changing ocean conditions, and critical habitat loss that have severely harmed salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This funding is much-needed relief to support sustainable fisheries and resilient communities while we work to improve salmon runs and ocean conditions long-term. I’m committed to supporting healthy salmon populations and making sure we can sustain good paying jobs for our coastal communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSalmon are critically important to our culture, identity, and economy here in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to the economic activity generated by Oregon\u2019s\u202fcommercial\u202ffishing industry, salmon are an important part of the cultural heritage of Pacific Northwest Tribes, generate recreational activity, and are a treasured natural resource across the state. As a result, declining salmon populations hurt the state and the region on many levels.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2013 to 2017, the commercial value of Chinook salmon was around $6.3 million annually for Oregon fisheries. But with the impacts of climate chaos impacting salmon populations, the\u202feconomic value of Chinook fell\u202fsharply\u202fto $2.3 million in 2018, $2 million in 2019, and $1.4 million in 2020.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
