\nU.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today announced that the Baker
\nTechnical Institute in Baker City will receive a $500,000 federal investment as
\none
\nof 29 grant recipients<\/a> nationwide to recruit, train and place workers in
\ncommunity revitalization and cleanup projects at brownfield sites, abandoned
\nland polluted by industrial practices.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cToo many
\ncommunities in our state, large and small, have been hurt by polluted land, and
\ncan benefit immensely from the community revitalization that comes from
\ncleaning up brownfield sites,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cThe brownfield cleanup training program at Baker Technical
\nInstitute will create good-paying jobs all over the state. It is a crucial
\nfirst step to continue to support our state\u2019s economic growth and tourism so
\nthat Oregon communities can reinvest in the land that we love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnsuring students
\ncan succeed in environmental jobs across Oregon will not only support our
\nenvironment, but our economy as well,\u201d Merkley said. \u201cThis program will provide a strong
\nfoundation for these students and set them up to do important cleanup work in
\nevery corner of the state.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Baker Technical Institute<\/a> planes
\nto train 60 students to be placed in local environmental jobs. Graduates will
\nbe trained in environmental site assessments, asbestos and lead paint safety,
\nand environmental career planning. Training is focused on students in Polk,
\nMarion, Linn, Benton, Crook, Jefferson, and Deschutes Counties, specifically
\ntribal members, and low-income and unemployed Oregonians. Partners include
\nBusiness Oregon, City of Prineville, Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde,
\nConfederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Knife River Construction, Oregon
\nDepartment of Human Services, and SMAF Environmental.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Biden\u2019s
\nBipartisan Infrastructure Law is supercharging EPA\u2019s Brownfields Program, which
\nis transforming blighted sites, protecting public health, and creating economic
\nopportunities in more overburdened communities than ever before,\u201d said
\nEPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe. \u201cThe investments announced today will not only support the cleanup of
\nsome of our nation\u2019s most polluted areas, but they will also equip a new
\ngeneration of workers to take on the significant environmental challenges that
\nplague overburdened neighborhoods, and jumpstart sustainable, long-term careers
\nin the communities that need these jobs the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Baker
\nTechnical Institute is honored to have been selected to provide this
\nmuch-needed workforce development training,” said Baker
\nTechnical Institute President Doug Dalton. “Two of the best investments that can be made to drive economic
\ndevelopment in most communities is improving infrastructure and the people
\nthat live there, and this training will do both. Graduates of this program
\nwill enter the market when the demand and pay for skilled workers are at
\nan all-time high.  A reliable workforce pipeline for employers can
\nhelp rural communities thrive. Our goal is to provide post-secondary
