{"id":18605,"date":"2024-02-28T13:42:43","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T18:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=18605"},"modified":"2024-02-28T13:42:45","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T18:42:45","slug":"merkley-brown-introduce-legislation-banning-lng-exports-to-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-brown-introduce-legislation-banning-lng-exports-to-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley, Brown Introduce Legislation Banning LNG Exports to China"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Legislation would also ban exports to Russia, Iran, and North Korea<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Today, Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Ohio\u2019s U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown introduced the <em>Protecting American Households from Rising Energy Costs Act<\/em>, legislation that would lower prices for American households by banning the export of crude oil or liquefied natural gas (LNG) to our biggest adversaries: China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to stop raising prices for Americans by sending LNG to our adversaries,\u201d <strong>dijo el senador Merkley.<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m partnering with Senator Brown to fight to lower energy prices for working Americans.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe should not allow American liquid natural gas to fuel China\u2019s state-sponsored industries. The Chinese Communist Party uses that energy to cheat and undermine Ohio production and Ohio jobs,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>said Senator Brown.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cBlocking China and other adversaries from obtaining our LNG will protect our national security, and keep more of this energy in America, helping bring down prices for Ohioans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Merkley and Brown, this legislation is sponsored by Senators Angus King (I-VT) and Jack Reed (D-RI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2018, U.S. LNG exports have more than tripled to 14 billion cubic feet per day, making the United States the largest exporter of LNG in global history. Further, exports could rise another 48 billion cubic feet per day, almost three times more than today\u2019s large volumes, when projects that are either under construction or fully permitted come online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of LNG were exported to China, making it the second largest destination for U.S. LNG at 12.7 percent of exports.&nbsp;Exports to China dropped in the wake of Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, but China is locking up long-term LNG contracts from the U.S. for proposed projects. Exporting LNG is causing price instability and rising costs for American households and industries.
