PORTLAND, Ore. \u2014
\nAbout 400 people filled the East Portland Community
\nCenter <\/a>Saturday afternoon to hear Presidente Joe Biden <\/a>give a speech on how inflation is
\nimpacting prescription drug costs.<\/p>\n

President Biden took
\nthe podium at around 12:30 p.m. He talked about lowering costs for American
\nfamilies, primarily seniors. <\/p>\n

He championed
\nsu Inflation Reduction Act,<\/a> which goes into effect in
\nJanuary. It will lower health care premiums for millions of Americans, drop
\nprescription drug prices and cap out-of-pocket expenses for prescription drugs
\nat $2,000 per year.<\/p>\n

President Biden<\/a> was joined by Senators Ron Wyden and
\nJeff Merkley and Representative Suzanne Bonamici.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year alone
\ndrug companies raised the price of more than 1,200 drugs higher than the rate
\nof inflation,\u201d said the president. \u201cToday marks the beginning of Medicaid\u2019s
\nopen enrollment period so when seniors pick plans for next year, they\u2019ll be
\nable to take advantage of the progress we\u2019ve made that\u2019s not all for years the
\nfee you pay for Medicare to cover your visits to doctors\u2019 offices have gone up
\nnow for the first time in more than a decade they\u2019re going to go down\u2026 they\u2019re
\ngoing to go down.”<\/p>\n

His Ley de Reducci\u00f3n de la Inflaci\u00f3n<\/a> will also cap out-of-pocket
\ncosts for things like insulin to just $35.  <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to keep
\nfighting for lowering costs of insulin for children and families as well
\nbecause of the Inflation Reduction Act seniors are also going to get their
\nrecommended vaccines without any co pays,\u201d said the president.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a change that
\nwould help many of the families sitting in the audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of my aunts
\nare senior citizens, and they have to pay for medications out of their pocket
\nand so it\u2019ll be a great help,\u201d said Twauna Hennessee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a sister
\nwho\u2019s on social security disability and so she gets her health coverage through
\nMedicare, and I think it\u2019s going to make a significant difference from her,\u201d
\nadded Claire Syrett who drove from Eugene to watch the president speak.<\/p>\n

The president also
\ntargeted the republicans in congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cFolks let me tell
\nyou something every single democrat in congress voted for the Inflation
\nReduction Act and every single republican voted against it every single one
\nhouse and senate not only that now the congressional republicans are telling us
\nit\u2019s their number one priority if they win their number one priority is repeal
\nthe Inflation Reduction Act,\u201d said the president.<\/p>\n

This concerns some
\nOregonians like Syrett. \u201cFor the republicans to be so cold hearted as to not
\nrecognize the real impacts this has on people and their daily lives that is
\nvery disturbing and I hope we don\u2019t see that happen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Biden also took the opportunity
\nto highlight his view of the working class.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a bubble up
\nguy. When the middle class does well, the working-class people have a way up
\nand the wealthy do just fine and by the way the middle class built this country
\nand unions built the middle class,\u201d said the president.<\/p>\n

He left many with a
\nrenewed sense of hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s genuine. I
\nfeel like he genuinely cares about people like he genuinely cares about the
\nworking class,\u201d said Hennessee.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy to lose
\nhope right now things are scary and so I really appreciate that he had that to
\nsay to us,\u201d added Syrett.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just have to
\nremember who in God\u2019s name we are\u2026 this is the United States of America and
\nI\u2019ve never been more optimistic in my life,\u201d said the president.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The next stop for
