These&nbsp;projects are intended to&nbsp;expand<br \/>\nmarkets for&nbsp;commodities that are produced with smaller or no carbon<br \/>\nfootprints, helping reduce the carbon pollution driving climate chaos and<br \/>\nsupporting both Oregon climate-friendly agricultural producers and the<br \/>\nbusinesses that help producers with climate-smart systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgriculture<br \/>\nproducers play a huge role in Oregon\u2019s economy, and as the stewards of the land<br \/>\nand we need to help make sure they have the means and incentives to continue<br \/>\nproducing and farming in a sustainable, climate-friendly way,\u201d said Merkley.<br \/>\n\u201cThese climate-smart awards are an important step forward for Oregon\u2019s<br \/>\nagriculture producers\u2014and for our climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOregon farmers,<br \/>\nranchers and wood producers have long generated jobs statewide, as well as<br \/>\nquality goods sought after nationwide,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cThis significant federal<br \/>\ninvestment ensures they can continue to produce those jobs and goods using<br \/>\nfresh strategies that fight the climate crisis in a smart and sustainable<br \/>\nmanner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Projects and<br \/>\nrecipients can be found below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>$15 million to Oregon Climate Trust<\/b>&nbsp;for its TRACT Program Traceable<br \/>\nReforestation project: A project that addresses the need to expand and recover<br \/>\nthe nation\u2019s forest estate to balance the demand for wood products with the<br \/>\nincreasing need for forests to serve as carbon reservoirs. Every acre planted<br \/>\n&amp; the volume of forest products generated will have a quantified and<br \/>\nverified climate benefit in metric tons of CO2e.<\/li>\n<li><b>$10 million to Sustainable Northwest<\/b>&nbsp;for its Building a Regenerative<br \/>\nRanching Economy in the West project: This project will implement climate-smart<br \/>\ngrazing practices in beef production for 120 operations across thirteen states<br \/>\nand over 7 million acres of public and private rangelands, reducing greenhouse<br \/>\ngas emissions and increasing market returns for participants.<\/li>\n<li><b>$50 million to Oregon State University<\/b>&nbsp;(and other universities) for its<br \/>\nClimate Smart Potatoes project: This project will build climate-smart markets<br \/>\nand advance adoption of climate-smart management systems in the Pacific<br \/>\nNorthwest states of Idaho, Washington and Oregon where more than 62% of U.S.<br \/>\npotatoes are grown and 15% of the domestic supply of seed potatoes are<br \/>\nproduced.<\/li>\n<li><b>$25 million to Sustainable Northwest<\/b>&nbsp;for its Building the Climate Smart Wood<br \/>\nEconomyproject: This project brings together Tribal, small family forest, and<br \/>\nnonprofit wood producers with data scientists and the design and construction<br \/>\nindustry to manage and restore tens of thousands of acres in Oregon. The project<br \/>\nwill quantify the positive impacts of climate-smart management on carbon<br \/>\nsequestration, wildfire intensity, and cultural values, and will also build<br \/>\nresources for project teams to navigate climate-smart markets through<br \/>\npre-design, design, and construction phases and support sale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Partnerships for<br \/>\nClimate-Smart Commodities is part of USDA\u2019s broader strategy to position<br \/>\nagriculture and forestry as leaders in climate change mitigation through<br \/>\nvoluntary, incentive-based, market-driven approaches.
