WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2014 The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation (CTUIR) will receive
\nover $15.5 million in federal funding for high-speed Internet and digital
\ntraining on Tribal lands, according to a press release from the U.S. Senate.
\nThe funding was announced by Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley
\n(D-Ore.), who claim the funding will improve education, job and health care
\naccess on Tribal land. <\/p>\n
\u201cTribal communities
\ndeserve robust access to high-speed Internet so children are connected to
\nclassroom research, small businesses are linked to their customers, and
\nfamilies can take full advantage of telehealth opportunities,\u201d said Wyden.<\/p>\n
The funding is
\nthrough the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Department of Commerce\u2019s
\nNational Telecommunications and Information Administration grant. It will
\ninvest in fiber installation connecting nearly 350 households on the
\nreservation that are currently without service. The houses will get a minimum
\nof 100 Mbps\/100 Mbps qualifying broadband service, according to the press
\nrelease. <\/p>\n

The CTUIR has been
\nworking on a fiber optic broadband network over the past five years, trying to
\nconnect government offices, health clinics, schools and Tribal enterprises,
\naccording to Brigham. She says the network is critical to providing government
\nservices and jobs on the reservation. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom telehealth appointments,
\nto remote learning and business opportunities for Tribal communities, reliable
\naccess to broadband and high-speed internet is a critical need in today\u2019s
\nconnected world,\u201d said Merkley. \u201cThis funding to the Confederated Tribes of the
\nUmatilla Indian Reservation will provide broadband to residents in remote areas
\nof the reservation and help boost the ability to connect with health providers,
