\n\u2013 U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today announced that three Oregon
\ntribal organizations will receive a combined more than $1.6 million from
\nthe Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) to continue to provide victim
\nand intervention services after sexual violence on tribal land.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAddressing the
\natrocity of sexual violence on tribal land couldn\u2019t be more urgent,\u201d Wyden
\nsaid. \u201cI am gratified to see tribal
\ngovernments getting more resources to build even stronger services to victims
\nof sexual violence, especially reaffirming tribal criminal jurisdiction over
\nnon-Indian perpetrators. Native Americans are experiencing sexual assault at twice the rate<\/a> of any other racial group. More needs to be
\ndone at every level to prevent such violence, and I will not stop fighting so
\nthat victims can get the support and protection they deserve as they heal and
\nseek accountability for their attackers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTribal communities?in
\nOregon are facing?disproportionate rates of sexual violence. We must do
\neverything in our power to protect people from sexual assault and abuse, and
\nprovide crucial resources to support these efforts,\u201d Merkley said.?\u201cThis funding to the Columbia River
\nInter-Tribal Fish Commission, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and
\nthe Klamath Tribes will help provide Tribal governments with the tools they
\nneed to respond to sexual assault and abuse cases, and ensure perpetrators are
\nheld accountable.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The OVW grants provide funding and resources for tribal
\ngovernments to respond to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault,
\nsex trafficking, and stalking in their communities. These grant funds will be
\nallocated as follows:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. El
    \n Klamath Tribes: $447,256 for criminal justice system programs ensure that
    \n victims find safety and justice and that non-Indians who commit sex crimes
    \n on tribal lands are held accountable.<\/li>\n
  2. Columbia
    \n River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission: $650,617 for culturally competent
    \n victim services to prevent, address and adjudicate sexual violence.<\/li>\n
  3. El
    \n Confederated Tribes of the Siletz: $525,000 to create, maintain, and expand
    \n sustainable Tribal sexual assault services.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cWe are very
    \nappreciative of the grant funds,\u201d Siletz Tribal Chair Delores Pigsley
    \nsaid. \u201cVAWA has been underfunded since
    \nits inception. The tribe will be more proactive in our assistance for our
    \nmembers. Thank you Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley for recognizing the needs
    \nof the tribes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

    \nlive and fish along the Columbia River face many social challenges, a situation
    \nthat is unfortunately common throughout Indian Country,\u201d said Columbia River
    \nInter-Tribal Fish Commission Executive Director Aja DeCoteau. \u201cThis funding will allow us to continue
    \nproviding victims of sexual violence with essential supportive services and
    \nculturally-informed prevention programs that help support stronger, healthier,
    \nand safer communities. We appreciate Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley for
