\ntoday announced that Portland State University (PSU) and Portland Community
\nCollege (PCC) will receive a combined more than $1.1 million from the U.S.
\nDepartment of Education to provide on-campus child care for low-income students
\nwho are parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cParenting while pursuing higher education is incredibly
\nchallenging, so alleviating the added cost and commute time of off-campus child
\ncare provides parenting students a lifeline at PSU and PCC,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cWith
\nthe costs of child care skyrocketing and scarce supply of licensed care slots
\nin the Portland Metro region, families without means are often left scrambling.
\nOn-campus child care will really make the difference for many Oregon families.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHigher education has the ability to connect students with
\nopportunities to thrive and build stronger communities and economies, but far
\ntoo often obstacles keep people from taking this route, including finding
\naffordable child care,\u201d Merkley said. \u201cThis funding for on-campus child care at
\nPCC and PSU will provide many Oregon parents with the peace of mind in knowing
\nthat their children are being well cared-for so they can pursue higher
\neducation.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The U.S. Dept. of Education\u2019s Child Care Access Means
\nParents in School (CCAMPIS) program supports low-income parenting students in
\npostsecondary education by providing campus-based child care services. PSU will
\nreceive $572,360 and PCC will receive $618,556.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cPortland Community College is grateful to receive CCAMPIS
\nfunding, for many parents, affordable childcare is a barrier to higher
\neducation and graduation. This funding will bolster childcare programs on PCC
\ncampuses and provide additional wrap-around support, allowing more student
\nparents to persist and complete their degrees and attain greater economic
\nmobility,\u201d said PCC President Dr. Adrien Bennings.<\/p>\n

“Portland State University serves a richly diverse
\nstudent population in terms of race, age and background,” said PSU
\nPresident Stephen Percy. “A quarter of our student population have
\nchildren so providing on-campus options for child care is extremely important
\nfor their success in the classroom. We’re grateful for this funding to support
\nthose students and help PSU to continue to provide safe and engaging
