SALEM, Ore. \u2014 President Joe Biden spoke on Tuesday
\nabout the need for Congress to pass the Disclose Act.<\/p>\n
The legislation would require super PACs and other groups to
\ndisclose anyone who contributes more than $10,000 during an election.<\/p>\n
Foreign entities would also be banned from making donations
\nof any kind.<\/p>\n
Senator Jeff Merkley has been a proponent of getting dark
\nmoney out of politics.<\/p>\n
Wednesday, he spoke of its growing influence.<\/p>\n
“We’ve seen the funding for political activities in
\ndark money category go from a couple million dollars some 12 years ago… to
\ntoday, we’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars,” Merkley said,
\n“and we just saw a $1.6 billion donation from a single person to be
\ndirected into a dark money strategy.”<\/p>\n
Senator Merkley would also like to see an end to
\ngerrymandering and protection of the ballot box as ways to further safeguard
\nelections.<\/p>\n
The Senate is expected to vote on the bill this week after
\nHouse democrats approved it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
