{"id":19680,"date":"2024-06-06T17:57:42","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T21:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=19680"},"modified":"2024-06-06T17:57:45","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T21:57:45","slug":"wyden-merkley-colleagues-call-to-support-small-cannabis-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/wyden-merkley-colleagues-call-to-support-small-cannabis-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyden, Merkley, Colleagues Call to Support Small Cannabis Businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Washington DC <\/em><\/strong><strong>\u2014 <\/strong>U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today joined Senate colleagues in calling on the Senate Appropriations Committee to allow small cannabis businesses in Oregon and other states that have legalized cannabis sale and use to access Small Business Administration (SBA) loans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSBA\u2019s current policy excludes from its loan and entrepreneurial development programs all small businesses with \u201cdirect\u201d or \u201cindirect\u201d products or services that aid the use, growth, enhancement, or other development of cannabis,\u201d <strong>escribieron los senadores.<\/strong> \u201cConsequently, small businesses in states with some form of legal cannabis must choose between remaining eligible for SBA financing and support and participating in or doing business with a rapidly-growing and legal industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter was sent to the Senate Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government chairman U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and ranking member U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty (R-Tn.).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSBA loan programs would be especially helpful to cannabis small businesses because they would fill gaps left by the private sector and could expand the availability of capital for many entrepreneurs\u2013 including for our minority, women, and veteran business owners,\u201d <strong>continuaron los senadores.<\/strong> \u201cAccess to SBA loan and entrepreneurship programs would support a rapidly growing industry that creates jobs, supports small businesses, and raises revenues in states that have chosen to legalize cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wyden and Merkley have both been advocates for small cannabis businesses. Wyden and Merkley recently reintroduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/4226\">Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act<\/a> in May to decriminalize cannabis nationally.&nbsp; Wyden is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/wyden-statement-on-safer-banking-act\">co-sponsor of the SAFER Banking Act<\/a>, Senator Merkley\u2019s bill which would help legal small cannabis businesses access banking services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter was led by U.S Senators Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.).
