{"id":19950,"date":"2024-07-11T12:52:21","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T16:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=19950"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:52:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T16:52:22","slug":"oregon-delegation-announces-22-million-usda-seafood-purchase-to-boost-oregons-coastal-communities-and-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/oregon-delegation-announces-22-million-usda-seafood-purchase-to-boost-oregons-coastal-communities-and-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon Delegation Announces $22 Million USDA Seafood Purchase to Boost Oregon\u2019s Coastal Communities and Economy\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Funding announcement comes after Merkley-led letter urged the USDA for more federal support to West Coast fishermen and seafood harvesters, processors, and distributors<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, along with Oregon\u2019s U.S. Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Val Hoyle (OR-04), and Andrea Salinas (OR-06), announced today that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a total of $22 million to purchase Pacific Northwest and West Coast seafood products\u2014$14 million for West Coast whiting fillets and $8 million for rockfish fillets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approved federal funding comes after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/merkley-wyden-bonamici-hoyle-salinas-urge-continued-support-for-west-coast-fishermen-and-oregons-seafood-industry\/__;!!Bg5easoyC-OII2vlEqY8mTBrtW-N4OJKAQ!LeBsG4FhB_uKo0enCxov2MhuD6a3FblUIy3FN7bQzehM_THmk6RVo6vSZ3wVOMf5lg6_8ycvyhjyIhCxmphUZU5OUJF4oUybkoTUZG-9eE1v$\">Merkley led members of the Oregon delegation in a letter in June<\/a>&nbsp;to USDA Administrator Bruce Summers, who oversees the agency\u2019s Agricultural Marketing Service, calling on the USDA to deliver critical federal support to West Coast fishermen and seafood harvesters, processors, and distributors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOregon\u2019s fisheries are the lifeblood of our coastal communities, and when they thrive, the whole Oregon Coast thrives,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>dijo Merkley.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThis USDA purchasing announcement will boost Oregon\u2019s coastal fishermen and world-class seafood producers while also ensuring high-quality, nutritious seafood is included in food assistance programs here in Oregon, and across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my town halls this year,&nbsp;as well as in years past,&nbsp;up and down the Oregon Coast, I\u2019ve heard firsthand from fishing communities and seafood processors just how hard they\u2019ve been slammed by factors out of their control,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>dijo Wyden.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m glad the teamwork with all of these Oregonians on the coast and the delegation has delivered this federal purchase of whiting and rockfish to help weather the economic storm and generate jobs in fishing, processing and distributing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis seafood purchase will support Oregon\u2019s essential fishing industry while strengthening coastal communities and the state\u2019s economy,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>dijo Bonamici.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cI am grateful to have worked with the Oregon delegation to&nbsp;help secure another investment in Oregon\u2019s seafood harvesters, processors, and distributors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, the&nbsp;USDA&nbsp;announced that they will be purchasing seafood from Oregon fisherman to go to food assistance programs,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Hoyle said<\/strong>.&nbsp;\u201cGiven that one in six children in Oregon experiences hunger, we need to continue supporting programs like this to help get healthy food to the tables of those that need it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m&nbsp;pleased to see that&nbsp;USDA&nbsp;has heeded our calls to provide more support for fishermen and seafood processors on the West Coast,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>said Salinas.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cFishing is key to our economy and way of life here in Oregon.
