As wildfires burn throughout the state, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley<\/a> is working on
\ntwo bills to deal with what he calls a smoke crisis.<\/p>\n

The Smoke Ready Community Act would create grants to make
\nair quality upgrades more accessible and provide more funding for
\ninfrastructure upgrades.<\/p>\n

Those upgrades would include smoke filters in public
\nbuildings and more protective gear, like masks.<\/p>\n

“The communities would decide what specifically they
\nthink would work best and for some it’s having gear ready to disburse which is
\na mask to help people keep smoke out of their lungs for others they’re really
\ngoing to emphasize having spaces, whether it\u2019s schools or public buildings
\nwhere it\u2019s highly filtered air.” said Merkley.<\/p>\n

The second bill, The Smoke Planning and Research Act, will
\nprovide federal funding toward research and development.<\/p>\n

His plan includes creating four centers to research wildfire
\nsmoke. One of which would be at the University of Oregon.<\/p>\n

“The University builds a huge network of individuals within
\nthe university outside the University with all the stakeholder groups by having
\ncontinuous focus on developing and testing the strategies and that becomes very
\nuseful.”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In addition, there would be $20-million in federal funding
