U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley has introduced two bills intended
\nto mitigate the effects of wildfire smoke. Today, the Smoke-Ready Communities
\nAct and the Smoke Planning and Research Act received a hearing<\/a> in front of the Environment and
\nPublic Works committee.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cassandra Moseley, a U of O professor in the Institute
\nfor a Sustainable Environment, spoke to the committee, saying \u201cWildfire smoke
\nis rapidly increasing public health risk, affecting not only rural communities
\nthat are located near these fires, but increasingly in major urban centers
\nhundreds or even thousands of miles away. Households and individuals need to be
\nprepared to act quickly when smoke arrives, and yet many lack the information
\nabout the practical steps they can take to keep themselves safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moseley identified five ways the bills address public health
\nrisk. Among them were looking into the root causes of wildfires, improving
\nsmoke monitoring and forecasting, and creating clean air shelters.<\/p>\n

U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced last week
\nthat three Oregon fire districts will receive a combined nearly $100,000 in
\nfederal Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG).  <\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day, firefighters in local fire districts\u2014both union
\nand volunteer\u2014put their lives on the line to protect our communities in
\nOregon,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cLocal firefighters have been on the front lines of fire
\nseason this year and every year. They deserve the equipment and training to do
\ntheir jobs to the best of their abilities so that our friends, neighbors, and
\nloved ones can continue to stay safe.\u201d  <\/p>\n

\u201cOregon\u2019s firefighters work tirelessly, risking their lives
\nto keep our homes and communities safe. It is crucial for local fire districts
\nto have the resources they need,\u201d Merkley said.  \u201cThis funding will ensure
\nthat the dedicated firefighters in Coos Bay, Siletz, and Sheridan are well
\nequipped and prepared to keep protecting the Oregonians they serve.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWithout this support, many communities \u2013 including Coos Bay
\n\u2013 would be forced to utilize tools that are obsolete. Coos Bay Fire Department
\nwill replace our outdated Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC). These TICs allow
\nfirefighters to see through smoke and low light environments to find hot spots
\nor even victims by using the temperature differences to create a picture,\u201d said
\nMark R. Anderson, Fire Chief Coos Bay Fire Department. \u201cThe firefighters of
\nCoos Bay are keenly aware of the value of this tool since it was 20 years ago
\n(November 25, 2002) that three Coos Bay firefighters were killed in a fire. The
\nfollowing investigation revealed that having Thermal Imaging Cameras may likely
\nhave prevented this tragedy.  The FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant
\nprogram is a vital partnership with our nation\u2019s fire service agencies;
\nproviding the support needed to serve their communities. I would like to thank
\nSenators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, as well as our other elected officials
