Oregon\u2019s ports,
\nwaterways, and coastal, fishing, and tribal communities could receive millions
\nof dollars in federal funding under U.S. Senate Appropriations bills, according
\nto Oregon U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley.<\/p>\n
Merkley said the
\nfunding bills make significant, targeted investments in small ports and
\nshipyards, boost Pacific salmon and steelhead recovery, and support Oregon’s
\nvital fishing industry.<\/p>\n
“All, while taking
\non the harmful impacts climate chaos is inflicting on our fragile, complex
\nmarine ecosystems,” he said. <\/p>\n

\nfor the Oregon Coast include:<\/p>\n
Peque\u00f1os Puertos y Navegaci\u00f3n de Cuerpos de Ej\u00e9rcito: <\/b>The program, which is vital source of
\nfunding to help Oregon ports pay for dredging and other necessary
\ninfrastructure projects, received over $355 million for deep-draft harbor and
\nchannel improvements, $15 million for inland waterways, $25 million for navigation
\nmaintenance, and $65 million for small, remote, or subsistence navigation.<\/p>\n
Peque\u00f1os Astilleros:<\/b> The bill provides $25 million for assistance to small shipyards.
\nThis program supports small shipyards by providing grants that can be used to
\npurchase equipment or train employees.<\/p>\n
Recuperaci\u00f3n de salm\u00f3n: <\/b>The bill preserves $65 million for the Pacific Coastal Salmon
\nRecovery Fund. Created in 2000, this fund is a competitive grant program
\ndesigned to address declining Pacific salmon and steelhead populations by
\nsupporting conservation efforts in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and
\nAlaska. The program is essential to preventing the extinction of the 28 listed
\nsalmon and steelhead species on the West Coast.<\/p>\n

\nEstuarine Research Reserve System, and Sanctuaries and Marine Protected
\nAreas.<\/p>\n
\nresearch to improve the productivity, sustainability, and resiliency of the
\nPacific shellfish agricultural system. This research is critical to efforts to
\nmitigate the impacts of climate chaos on the health and economies of Oregon\u2019s
\ncoastal communities.<\/p>\n
\npromote the research, demonstration, and development of emerging technologies,
\npractices, and processes that improve maritime industrial environmental
\nsustainability.<\/p>\n
\nCommunities, and NOAA to continue activities in support of the obligations set
\nforth in the renegotiated annex of the Pacific Salmon Treaty. The bill also
\nprovides $23 million for the operation and maintenance of Mitchell Act
\nhatcheries, which are meant to produce salmon and steelhead in the Columbia
\nRiver Basin for harvest and conservation purposes.<\/p>\n
