U.S. Department
\nof Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Oregon U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and
\nJeff Merkley and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown visited the O.H.
\nHinsdale Wave Research Laboratory<\/a> at Oregon State University on
\nTuesday afternoon, with Granholm touting wave energy as “the elixir that
\nwe need” to address climate change by ending the nation’s reliance on
\nfossil fuels.<\/p>\n

The visit was
\norganized by OSU and the Pacific Marine Energy Center, a consortium of
\nuniversities including Oregon State that is focused on advancing marine
\nrenewable energy.  <\/p>\n

“We’ve all been
\nin the ocean,” Granholm told a group of OSU researchers and students
\nafter touring the lab\u2019s wave basin and flume. “We\u2019ve all felt the
\nenergy it has. That energy can be used to turn on the lights in our homes.
\nThose waves never stop moving.”  <\/p>\n

During the 80-minute
\nvisit to the wave lab, the secretary, senators and governor mingled with
\ngraduate students who provided presentations on their research. The leaders
\nalso discussed the future of green energy with OSU faculty from the colleges of
\nEngineering and Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.   <\/p>\n

The state and
\nfederal leaders heard presentations on the use of autonomous underwater robots,
\nwhich are seen as the key to safely inspecting and maintaining undersea
\ngeneration equipment. <\/p>\n

The leaders also
\nheard updates on PacWave, Oregon State\u2019s open-ocean wave energy test facility
\nto be constructed 7 miles off the Oregon Coast south of Newport, and C-Power,
\nan Oregon company that makes marine energy power generation devices.  <\/p>\n

“As a land
\ngrant institution, Oregon State University takes on society\u2019s most pressing
\nissues, like climate change by coming up with clean energy
\nsolutions,” OSU Interim President Becky Johnson told the state and
\nfederal leaders. “I\u2019m proud of our marine energy research and
\ndevelopment initiatives, which are only possible because of the support we
\nreceive at the federal and state levels.”  <\/p>\n

Wyden pledged to
\nmake collaboration, research and federal investments priorities in advancing
\nwave energy development.    <\/p>\n

“Every step of
\nthe way we\u2019ll bring people together, fishing families and the
\nTribes,” added Wyden. “We need both funding for the
\nresearch and for economic activity in the private sector. Sen. Merkley and I
\nare in a position to make sure marine energy gets done right.”  <\/p>\n

Wind, solar and wave
\nenergy show “enormous potential,” said Merkley. 
\n <\/p>\n

“We have some
\nof the best locations for wave power, and we need facilities like this lab and
\nPacWave to develop the technologies for harvesting it,” he
\nsaid. “My hope is that 10 years from now wave energy is a real
\nthing.”  <\/p>\n

Brown described
\nGranholm as a “phenomenal leader working to decarbonize the energy
\ngrid.”  <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

“She shares our
\nvalues, and the No. 1 value is collaboration,” Brown
\nsaid. “We need everyone, including the federal government and the
\nprivate sector, to make green energy work. Equity needs to be at the forefront
\nas we work toward a fossil-free energy future because we know that people of
\ncolor and Indigenous people have been disproportionately impacted by climate
