{"id":20389,"date":"2024-08-06T15:09:09","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T19:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=20389"},"modified":"2024-09-09T15:11:13","modified_gmt":"2024-09-09T19:11:13","slug":"oregon-delegation-pushes-for-usda-disaster-declaration-wildfires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/oregon-delegation-pushes-for-usda-disaster-declaration-wildfires\/","title":{"rendered":"OREGON DELEGATION PUSHES FOR USDA DISASTER DECLARATION-WILDFIRES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kqennewsradio.com\/2024\/08\/06\/oregon-delegation-pushes-for-usda-disaster-declaration-wildfires\/\">KQEN<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, Oregon\u2019s entire Congressional delegation \u2013 U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, alongside U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Susanne Bonamici, Val Hoyle, Andres Salinas, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and Cliff Bentz \u2013 sent a letter to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urging approval of Oregon Governor Tina Kotek\u2019s request for a disaster declaration for Oregon counties facing devastating wildfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A release said the lawmakers also strongly support the Governor\u2019s additional requests for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to open up more federal resources targeted to support impacted agricultural communities throughout the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawmakers wrote, \u201cAs climate chaos continues to worsen \u2013 turning fire seasons into fire years that see millions of acres scorched and countless lives forever changed \u2013 we must make sure communities can access the federal resources they need to equitably recover from these increasingly devastating fires\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The release said Oregon\u2019s wildfire season has already decimated communities throughout eastern Oregon as the state deals with five confirmed \u201cmegafires\u201d \u2013 the Durkee, Cow Valley, Falls, Lone Rock, and Monkey Creek fires \u2013 that have all started in July alone.
