The Coquille Indian Tribe expressed gratitude this week to
\nOregon\u2019s U.S. senators for supporting the tribe\u2019s conservation efforts on its
\nnamesake river.<\/p>\n
The Senate\u2019s appropriation bills for 2023 include $750,000
\nfor Coquille River salmon conservation, according to Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff
\nMerkley. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is going to help us address watershed management in a
\nholistic manner,\u201d said Tribal Chairman Brenda Meade.<\/p>\n
After learning last year that the Coquille River\u2019s fall
\nChinook salmon run was in peril, the tribe launched a cooperative initiative to
\nrescue and restore the prized fish. Initial efforts, aided by a coalition of
\ncommunity partners, grew into a historic agreement for the tribe and the Oregon
\nDepartment of Fish and Wildlife to co-manage the Coquille watershed.<\/p>\n
Salmon restoration remains a priority, but Meade said
\ncooperative efforts for habitat restoration will benefit a wide range of
\nstruggling species, including coho salmon and lamprey.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll continue looking for more resources and
\nworking with our community partners,\u201d she said. \u201cThe work has just begun.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The Senate appropriation bills are not final. They need to
