{"id":20513,"date":"2024-09-19T09:31:34","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T13:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=20513"},"modified":"2024-09-19T10:33:22","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T14:33:22","slug":"merkley-presses-for-ban-on-election-gambling-with-new-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-presses-for-ban-on-election-gambling-with-new-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley Presses for Ban on Election Gambling with New Legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Senator calls election casinos \u201ca profound corruption of our democracy\u201d in Senate floor address<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley today launched a new effort to prevent betting on U.S. elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley introduced the <em>Ban Gambling on Elections Act\u2014<\/em>a new bill to prevent Wall Street from setting up massive political betting markets that could influence and interfere with American elections while further eroding public trust in democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen big bets are cast on elections and dark money can smear candidates, you have the perfect combination of factors to destroy the integrity of our elections,\u201d <strong>merkley dijo<\/strong>. \u201cReducing our democracy to a horse race for the wealthy to bet on cheapens and weakens our democratic process by prioritizing money over the will of the American people. That is a bad bet for our democracy, and we cannot allow the voice of the voters to be undermined.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, less than two months before one of the most consequential elections in our lifetimes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-ruling-to-allow-betting-on-u-s-congressional-elections-is-a-disaster-for-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a federal judge overturned a decision from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)<\/a> to reject a proposal by a private prediction market operator to allow legal gambling on U.S. elections. A federal appeals court has since paused the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, Merkley took to the floor of the U.S. Senate to warn about efforts by Wall Street firms to exploit American democracy for profit. Ultra-rich Americans and huge corporations bet billions of dollars on the outcome of which party controls the House of Representatives or Senate,\u201d <strong>Merkley said on the Senate floor. <\/strong>\u201cAs the election approaches, one or two races might make the difference on whether they win or lose that bet. They now have a huge incentive to spend another vast sum smearing the candidate they want to lose. That is a profound corruption of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>El <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ban-Gambling-on-Elections-Act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ban Gambling on Elections Act<\/a> <\/em>is cosponsored by Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previamente, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-applauds-federal-agency-rejecting-proposal-to-bet-on-us-congressional-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merkley urged the CFTC<\/a> to reject a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-colleagues-no-gambling-on-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">then-pending proposal from a Wall Street firm<\/a> to allow for legal gambling on U.S. elections and their outcomes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-leads-senate-house-colleagues-to-call-for-no-gambling-on-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He also led his colleagues<\/a> in urging CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam to finalize and implement a proposed rule to ban election betting.
