Senator introduces new bill to address how car companies can use American’s data<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley today announced the introduction of new legislation to protect consumer’s privacy from companies who collect and sell American’s car data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, there is a troubling trend of collecting, storing, and selling data from American’s vehicles \u2013 largely without driver’s knowledge. Recent reporting<\/a> has even documented automakers selling the data from millions of cars to make billions in profit, including car manufacturers selling consumer’s private data to insurance companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to hit the brakes on big corporations collecting and profiting off of driver’s data without their consent,\u201d dijo Merkley. <\/strong>\u201cAutomakers should not have the power to invade our privacy unchecked, and we need strong protections in place to guarantee that American’s privacy comes before corporate profits.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Merkley introduced the Car Privacy Rights Act<\/em> to require any company or third party that collects car data \u2013 including car manufacturers, insurance companies, and digital applications \u2013 to get explicit consent from the consumer to share or sell their data. The bill also requires these entities to provide a clear option to opt-out of the data collection entirely, ensuring consumers are not locked into these predatory practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
