{"id":20636,"date":"2024-09-27T10:03:18","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T14:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=20636"},"modified":"2024-10-10T10:12:26","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T14:12:26","slug":"ftc-sues-corporate-landlord-for-predatory-tactics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/ftc-sues-corporate-landlord-for-predatory-tactics\/","title":{"rendered":"FTC sues corporate landlord for \u2018predatory\u2019 tactics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/news\/washington-dc\/ftc-sues-corporate-landlord-for-predatory-tactics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KOIN<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission says a $48 million settlement should put an end to what it calls \u201cpredatory\u201d tactics by the nation\u2019s largest landlord of single-family homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTC says Invitation Homes was charging hidden fees and withholding security deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot even maintaining livable conditions at various points,\u201d FTC Chair Lina Khan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FTC Chair Lina Khan says this was a deliberate strategy \u201cto really create revenue even though it was coming at the expense of honest renters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Invitation Homes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.invh.com\/news-events\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Invitation-Homes-Reaches-Agreement-with-Federal-Trade-Commission\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;says&nbsp;<\/a>the agreement contains \u201cno admission of wrongdoing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company says the settlement: \u201cputs this matter behind the Company\u201d&nbsp;and it will \u201cmove forward\u2026to better serve its customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a win for families. But let\u2019s be clear. These abuses are symptoms of a much larger problem,\u201d Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley says corporate investors are invading the housing market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A forecast by MetLife Investment Management found institutional investors could control 40% of single-family rental homes by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re driving up the price to buy a home, putting a stake through the heart of the dream of homeownership,\u201d Sen. Merkley said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley is sponsoring a bill he says would stop that. It would ban hedge funds from buying single-family homes and make them sell the homes they do own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are common sense guard rails,\u201d Merkley said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley\u2019s bill has stalled since he introduced it last year, but he says he\u2019s encouraged by the FTC\u2019s actions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTC says the settlement money will refund renters hurt by the company.
