Democrats Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley rallied with workers in front of a Springfield post office Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley, as well as union leaders, said they were concerned that sending mail to Portland instead of processing it locally was causing delays. \u201cMail has to go hundreds of miles to a processing center just to be reorganized and sent to your next door neighbor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley also said he had also heard reports from constituents that they had received late bills, prescriptions and other important documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wyden said he was concerned businesses in the Eugene-Springfield metro area, and the Medford area, could also see impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOregon is a small business state,\u201d he said. \u201cThese small businesses have been telling Senator Merkley and I that their mail gets delayed, it&#8217;s costing them opportunities, it&#8217;s costing them money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American Postal Workers Union Eugene and Springfield President Cory Benitez-Egerton said returning mail processing to Eugene would preserve trust and local jobs, and make the system more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe future of the Postal Service should reflect the needs and the desires of the people it serves, not the interests of a disconnected bureaucracy,\u201d Benitez-Egerton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consolidating processing to fewer regional facilities is a part of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/what\/strategic-plans\/delivering-for-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>larger effort<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;at the Postal Service, called the \u201cDelivering for America\u201d plan, to modernize and financially stabilize the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After pushback from communities, workers and some lawmakers, consolidation plans&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonstatestandard.com\/2024\/05\/16\/postal-service-pauses-plans-to-move-processing-centers-including-missoulas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>were delayed<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in other states. Oregon\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijpr.org\/politics-government\/2024-05-28\/despite-national-pause-oregon-is-stuck-with-usps-changes-that-locals-say-hurt-small-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>consolidation efforts<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;are still underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an emailed comment, Seattle-based USPS spokesperson Kim Frum said the average delivery time for Oregon has been two days since 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough our Delivering for America investments, we have built capacity into our processing, logistics, and delivery infrastructure to meet customers&#8217; evolving mail and package needs,\u201d she said.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KLCC Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senators are calling on the Postal Service to stop efforts to consolidate mail processing.
