{"id":2108,"date":"2022-07-08T16:38:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T20:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/portland-international-airport-gets-184m-to-lower-emissions-22\/"},"modified":"2023-07-24T11:05:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T15:05:00","slug":"portland-international-airport-gets-184m-to-lower-emissions-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/portland-international-airport-gets-184m-to-lower-emissions-22\/","title":{"rendered":"Portland International Airport gets $18.4M to lower emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PORTLAND, Oreg\u00f3n (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/\">KOIN<\/a>) \u2014 With the Portland International Airport expanding<br \/>\nin the last couple of years, officials hope an influx of federal funds will<br \/>\nhelp the airport lower its carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press release, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and<br \/>\nJeff Merkley, along with Congressman Earl Blumenauer announced that PDX will be<br \/>\nawarded $18.4M from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for advances to heating<br \/>\nand cooling systems.<\/p>\n<p>They say the improvements will \u201cdramatically\u201d lower energy<br \/>\ndemand by 83%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl aeropuerto de Portland ha crecido tanto en los \u00faltimos<br \/>\nyears\u2014in size, overall use and in sustainability practices,\u201d Wyden said. \u201dThe<br \/>\nBipartisan Infrastructure Law I am proud to have supported makes this essential<br \/>\ninvestment in the infrastructure at the airport for more effective heating and<br \/>\ncooling in line with urgent nationwide goals to tackle the climate crisis<br \/>\nhead-on by lowering carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The airport will use the millions to install a new heat<br \/>\npump, replace old chillers and boilers that up to 50 years old, added the<br \/>\nannouncement. According to officials, the project\u2019s goal is to be zero carbon<br \/>\nemissions by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMajor investments in efficient, cost-saving, and climate<br \/>\nfriendly improvements at PDX is win-win for Portland and the State of Oregon,\u201d<br \/>\nMerkley said. \u201cTransitioning to clean heat pumps isn\u2019t just good for our<br \/>\npresent, it\u2019s good for our future by getting us closer to zero carbon emissions<br \/>\nby 2050. This is the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blumenauer said Portland has been a leader in sustainable<br \/>\ninfrastructure and how the city\u2019s airport and an \u201cimportant\u201d reflection of this<br \/>\nlegacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was proud to lead the Oregon delegation in securing $18.4<br \/>\nmillion dollars from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to<br \/>\nincrease the efficacy, sustainability and resilience of our airport,\u201d said<br \/>\nBlumenauer. \u201cThis historic investment is not just good for our community, but<br \/>\nour climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for PDX, the airport says it appreciates the Oregon<br \/>\nCongressional Delegation\u2019s support of this grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain firmly committed to a low-carbon future,\u201d said<br \/>\nPort of Portland Executive Director Curtis Robinhold. \u201cThe federal funds for<br \/>\nthis new system \u2013 which will improve the energy efficiency of PDX and<br \/>\nsignificantly reduce the environmental impact of our new upgraded airport \u2013<br \/>\nwill help us fully achieve our vision of a more sustainable and equitable PDX.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PORTLAND, Ore.
