{"id":21091,"date":"2024-12-20T13:25:05","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T18:25:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=21091"},"modified":"2024-12-20T13:25:08","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T18:25:08","slug":"merkley-wyden-announce-over-33-million-for-southern-oregon-critical-wildlife-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-wyden-announce-over-33-million-for-southern-oregon-critical-wildlife-crossing\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley, Wyden Announce Over $33 Million for Southern Oregon Critical Wildlife Crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced today that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is receiving $33,182,188 in federal funding to construct the Mariposa&nbsp;Preserve&nbsp;Wildlife&nbsp;Crossing over I-5 in Southern Oregon through the heart of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.&nbsp;Once complete, the&nbsp;wildlife crossing will be among the largest in the nation to significantly improve the movement of a wide-array of animals, while increasing the safety of drivers traveling on I-5 between Ashland and the California border.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This historic investment comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Federal Highways Administration\u00a0Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program\u2014made possible by the <em>Ley de Reducci\u00f3n de la Inflaci\u00f3n<\/em>\u2014and builds off the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/statewide-wins-merkley-wyden-deliver-critical-community-projects-across-oregon-in-2024-funding-package\/#:~:text=Washington%2C%20D.C.%20%E2%80%93%20Oregon's%20U.S.%20Senators,into%20law%20by%20President%20Biden.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$400,000 community-initiated project\u00a0that Merkley and Wyden<\/a> secured\u00a0earlier this year for the design and engineering phase of the project, which was needed to reach today\u2019s milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat a huge win for Southern Oregon! This&nbsp;first-ever I-5 wildlife crossing&nbsp;in Oregon&nbsp;will be instrumental in safeguarding all the special species that call the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument home, while protecting drivers from dangerous wildlife collisions and costly damages to their vehicles,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>dijo Merkley.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019ve long championed efforts to strengthen the Cascade-Siskiyou area, and this latest federal investment I pushed to secure will certainly go a long way toward protecting&nbsp;drivers and&nbsp;the diverse wildlife that are entwined with this spectacular landscape that\u2019s unlike anywhere in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEnsuring that native species have safe access across I-5 not only protects sensitive ecosystems affected by large roadways, but it also helps increase safety for motorists,\u201d <strong>dijo Wyden.<\/strong> \u201cThis investment in&nbsp;wildlife&nbsp;crossing infrastructure that serves both the environment and Oregonians is exactly what I fought for in the Inflation Reduction Act, and I will continue to advocate for more resources that support these important projects across Oregon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWith this significant investment of federal funding, ODOT can now provide a new connection for&nbsp;wildlife&nbsp;in an ecologically diverse area. This will improve safety for drivers on I-5 by reducing&nbsp;wildlife&nbsp;collisions.
