Washington, D.C. \u2013 Following the Pentagon reaching a historic settlement with LGBTQ+ veterans, Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley vowed to continue his longtime efforts to restore dignity to veterans and servicemembers who were unjustly discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces because of their sexual orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is estimated that more than 100,000 servicemembers were wrongfully discharged from the Armed Forces on the basis of their sexual orientation between WWII and the official end of the military\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell\u201d policy in 2011. The Pentagon\u2019s settlement opens the door for many LGBTQ+ veterans to upgrade their \u201cOther Than Honorable\u201d discharges\u2014a necessary step to access their benefits\u2014and it will allow those who were honorably discharged to seek removal of discriminatory characterizations about their sexual orientations from their discharge form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cRecognizing unjust discharges based on sexual orientation is an important step to bend the arc toward justice, but there is much work to be done to fully honor all of the LGTBQ+ veterans who have faced injustice while serving our nation,\u201d dicho<\/strong> Merkley.<\/strong> \u201cEveryone who serves and sacrifices for our country deserves the full measure of our appreciation\u2014regardless of race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. To truly deliver on that promise, we must pass my legislation to restore full honor to LGBTQ+ veterans because these heroes\u2014like all of America\u2019s servicemembers and veterans\u2014deserve nothing less than our utmost respect and recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
While this settlement is a critical step toward justice,\u00a0much work remains to honor\u00a0all LGBTQ+ servicemembers and\u00a0veterans, and those no longer with us who faced lasting impacts from discriminatory military policies.\u00a0This\u00a0includes\u00a0late U.S. Navy veteran Martin Cerezo<\/a>, who\u00a0was on track to have a long military career until he was outed as gay in 1990\u00a0and given an \u201cOther Than Honorable\u201d discharge. With the help of Merkley\u2019s office, Martin\u2019s mother, Cheryle, was able to fulfill her son\u2019s dying wish to be buried at Willamette National Cemetery in June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merkley joins Cheryle\u2019s call to fight for full justice for mistreated LGBTQ+\u00a0veterans\u00a0and servicemembers.\u00a0He\u00a0is an original co-sponsor of the\u00a0Commission on Equity and Reconciliation in the Uniformed Services Act<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0a bill to establish a commission to investigate the historic and ongoing impacts of discriminatory military policies on LGBTQ+ servicemembers and\u00a0veterans. Merkley also leads a resolution to mark\u00a0September 20el<\/sup>\u00a0as National LGBTQ+\u00a0Veterans\u00a0Day<\/a>\u00a0to honor the resilience and courage demonstrated by LGBTQ+ individuals who have served our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
