(KTVZ) &#8212; Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley,<br \/>\nD-Ore., announced Friday that the city of La Pine will receive more than $17.7<br \/>\nmillion in loans and grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for<br \/>\nmunicipal water improvements to transition away from septic systems<br \/>\ncontaminating groundwater for residents and small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people in this part of Deschutes County have long<br \/>\nsuffered from groundwater contamination from the septic systems,\u201d&nbsp;said<br \/>\nWyden, who introduced the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/wyden-merkley-heinrich-introduce-bill-to-expand-access-to-clean-drinking-water-safe-sanitation-for-underserved-communities\"><i>Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Sector Development Act<br \/>\nof 2022<\/i><\/a>.&nbsp;\u201cThe city has already laid some of the<br \/>\nfoundation&nbsp;for&nbsp;a municipal wastewater system, so I\u2019m gratified to see<br \/>\nfederal funds going toward getting this vital municipal wastewater project over<br \/>\nthe finish line.&nbsp;&nbsp;This money will help La Pine reduce&nbsp;existing<br \/>\ngroundwater contamination and protect Oregon watersheds in this part of our<br \/>\nstate for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess to clean, reliable water and a strong water<br \/>\ninfrastructure system is vital to growing and strengthening our communities and<br \/>\neconomies,\u201d&nbsp;said Senator Merkley.&nbsp;\u201cThis USDA funding to La Pine will<br \/>\nprovide crucial support that will allow the city to improve not only their<br \/>\nwater infrastructure and wastewater system, but also the quality of the local<br \/>\nwatershed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city of La Pine municipal water system improvements will<br \/>\ninclude the following: Construction of a new 500,000-gallon water reservoir,<br \/>\ninstallation of new water distribution lines to enhance looping, circulation,<br \/>\nand fire flow capabilities, and the addition of the Cagle and Glenwood Acres<br \/>\nsubdivisions to the municipal water system.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the senators said the project will ensure that this<br \/>\nrural area will have the needed&nbsp;funds to improve sewer<br \/>\nsystem&nbsp;capacity, reduce contamination and improve the quality of the<br \/>\nwatershed for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of La Pine would like to thank both Senators Wyden<br \/>\nand Merkley, and Congressman Bentz for their efforts on behalf of all citizens<br \/>\nthat will benefit from these expansion improvements,\u201d&nbsp;said Mayor Dan<br \/>\nRicher.&nbsp;\u201cWe would also like to extend our appreciation for the efforts<br \/>\nmade by the United Stated Department of Agriculture and its regional<br \/>\nrepresentatives, who greatly assisted in bringing this funding package and<br \/>\nproject to fruition.
