Despite termination letters from many agencies citing \u201cpoor performance,\u201d probationary employees\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/21\/trump-mass-firings-federal-government-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appear<\/a>\u00a0to have been fired in indiscriminate batches, regardless of their individual performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of these fired workers were responsible for protecting Americans\u2019 health and safety, across areas like air travel, flood and wildfire response, infectious disease control, nuclear safety, veterans\u2019 health care and benefits, food safety, and managing the opioid epidemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump Administration has since called some of the firings an \u201caccident\u201d and scrambled to rehire certain workers \u2014 including people who work on the bird flu outbreak, nuclear security, veterans\u2019 health, and health services in Tribal communities. To date, agencies have not been able to rehire all of the workers affected and continue to face critical workforce shortages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cRather than make government more efficient, these firings appear to have created massive inefficiencies and put the American people at risk,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>wrote the Senators in their letter<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Trump Administration implements its \u201cplans for large-scale reductions in force,\u201d over 200,000 probationary workers are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/workforce\/2025\/02\/see-which-federal-agencies-are-firing-new-hires\/403033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expected to be laid off<\/a>, and private companies are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trellis.net\/article\/doge-directed-layoffs-at-doe-could-benefit-the-private-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expected to benefit<\/a>. In fact, some private companies, including some owned by or connected to Elon Musk and other Trump officials, have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/faa-doge-elon-musk-space-x\/\">begun entering<\/a>\u00a0agencies to take the role of fired workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cUnlike the federal government, those companies are not responsible for prioritizing Americans\u2019 health and safety interests, and we are concerned that they will not do so,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>said the Senators<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senators requested that GAO\u2019s investigation cover the duties of fired probationary workers, attempts to hire those workers back, data on how the terminations are impacting Americans\u2019 health and safety, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley and Wyden signed the letter led by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), alongside other signers Senators&nbsp;Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Edward J.
