{"id":21769,"date":"2025-03-17T10:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T14:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=21769"},"modified":"2025-03-17T10:23:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T14:23:13","slug":"wyden-merkley-colleagues-introduce-legislation-to-reverse-damage-from-trump-administrations-egregious-cuts-at-va","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/wyden-merkley-colleagues-introduce-legislation-to-reverse-damage-from-trump-administrations-egregious-cuts-at-va\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyden, Merkley, Colleagues Introduce Legislation to Reverse Damage from Trump Administration&#8217;s Egregious Cuts at VA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Washington D.C.\u2014<\/em><\/strong>U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley said today they have joined Senate colleagues in introducing comprehensive legislation that would protect veterans, military spouses and VA employees in Oregon and nationwide indiscriminately targeted in the Department of Government Efficiency\u2019s (DOGE) cuts at VA and across the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cVeterans and the benefits they earned with their service to our country are under indiscriminate and unjust attack by Trump, Musk and their flunkies at DOGE,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cThe <em>Putting Veterans First Act<\/em> would ensure these unduly fired employees are returned to work and ensure that service for veterans is not interrupted for one day longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere is no making sense of the Trump Administration\u2019s cruel, reckless plans to fire over 80,000 VA employees, many of them veterans themselves. Our veterans and military families deserve the full measure of our appreciation, not this stunning betrayal by President Trump,\u201d Merkley said. \u201cAll my colleagues should support this bill to reinstate and protect these heroes from Trump and Republicans\u2019 illegal and reckless cuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Veterans make up 30 percent of the federal workforce, with about 640,000 veterans working in federal agencies. For decades, administrations of both parties have made hiring veterans and military spouses to work in the federal government a priority\u2014including Donald Trump\u2019s previous administration. Just this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/workforce\/2025\/03\/va-plans-lay-many-83000-employees-year\/403477\/?oref=ge-home-top-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an internal memo leaked the Trump administration\u2019s plans to cut more than 80,000 VA employees<\/a>, which would include at least 20,000 veterans, who make up 25 percent of VA\u2019s workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El <em>Putting Veterans First Act<\/em> would do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reinstate and protect members of the veteran and military community indiscriminately fired by DOGE working as federal employees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect the quality of VA care, benefits and employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase transparency and oversight of VA staffing, claims backlog and wait times data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect veterans\u2019 private data from DOGE and unelected billionaires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine the financial impact of DOGE\u2019s reckless cancellation of contracts at VA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide critical mental health care for former and current civil servants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide employment assistance for members of the Veteran and military community fired from the federal government in Trump\u2019s mass terminations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation was led by U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A summary of the legislation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterans.senate.gov\/services\/files\/710073EE-B15D-4FA7-AE7D-B5591F1D2F1A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aqu\u00ed.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">###<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington D.C.\u2014U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley said today they have joined Senate colleagues in introducing comprehensive legislation that would protect veterans, military spouses and VA employees in Oregon and nationwide indiscriminately targeted in the Department of Government Efficiency\u2019s (DOGE) cuts at VA and across the federal government. \u201cVeterans and the benefits they earned [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":18845,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[118,47],"class_list":["post-21769","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-press-releases","tag-delivering-for-oregon","tag-protecting-consumers-taxpayers-and-the-economy"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
