(who is also a lead sponsor of the SAFE Banking Act), <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/66891?source=email\">Cynthia Lummis<\/a> (Wyo.), <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/198816?source=email\">Kevin Cramer<\/a> (N.D.) and Alaska Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/221840?source=email\">Dan Sullivan<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/51218?source=email\">Lisa Murkowski <\/a>. One independent and 18 Democrats signed the letter, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/51219?source=email\">paty murray <\/a>(Wash.), the 3rd-ranking Democrat in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p><b>What&#8217;s the context? <\/b>The SAFE Act has passed the House six times, but never progressed out of committee in the Senate. Still, the<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2022\/05\/cannabis-crime-wave-boosts-banking-prospects-on-capitol-hill-00030330?source=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vibe is shifting<\/a> on Capitol Hill regarding cannabis legislation, as senators like Murray react to an increase in violent break-ins targeting cannabis companies in their home states and as lawmakers continue to wait for Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/51231?source=email\">Chuck Schumer<\/a> (DN.Y.), <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/211545?source=email\">Cory Booker<\/a> (D-N.J.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/cd.politicopro.com\/member\/51247?source=email\">Ron Wyden<\/a> (D-Ore.) to formally introduce their comprehensive cannabis descheduling and regulation bill. Merkley said recently there is &#8220;growing momentum and interest&#8221; around the SAFE Banking Act, though Democrats predominantly want the bill to be paired with social equity or criminal justice provisions.
