This provision is crucial to prevent DOGE from using subpoena power to pursue this data, which could be used to purge eligible voters from state voter rolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s playbook to suppress American voters, while handing over sensitive voter data to his billionaire bros who wants to privatize the federal government for his own personal gain, reads like a bad comic book,\u201d<strong>\u00a0dijo Wyden.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThis unconstitutional and illegal power grab undermines the free and fair elections America was built on and will disproportionately hurt rural communities, women and members of the military. We will not stand by while a convicted felon and his broligarchs ransack Americans\u2019 rights to free and fair elections for their own gain.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis anti-voter executive order is a direct assault on our democracy,\u201d\u00a0<strong>dijo Merkley.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cTrump is scheming to block eligible voters from voting and he\u2019s requiring states to turn over voter rolls- including your personal data- over to Elon Musk. It\u2019s illegal and deeply damaging.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The blatant Trump scheme to suppress access to the ballot box through overly burdensome documentation requirements is an attempt to implement the dangerous policies in Congressional Republicans\u2019&nbsp;<em>Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE)&nbsp;Act<\/em>, which will be considered by the House soon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 21 million voting age Americans lack simple access to the documents required by Trump\u2019s order, including a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or citizenship certificate. Further, nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/the-save-act-would-disenfranchise-millions-of-citizens\/#:~:text=Only%20half%20of%20American%20citizens%20have%20a%20passport,-Percentage%20of%20each&amp;text=in%20blue%20states.-,Note%3A%20An%20estimated%2053.1%20percent%20of%20the%20national%20population%20possess,(FY)%202020%E2%80%932024.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">half of all American citizens<\/a>\u00a0do not have valid passports, and millions more have a legal name that differs from other government-issued documents, including about 69 million married women whose birth certificates no longer match their legal name. Additionally, noncitizen voting is already a federal crime and is incredibly rare, with an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/immigrationimpact.com\/2024\/08\/01\/myths-about-noncitizen-voting-heritage-foundation-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis of Heritage Foundation data<\/a>\u00a0identifying only 68 such cases out of nearly 2 billion votes cast over four decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El&nbsp;<em>Defending America\u2019s Future Elections Act<\/em>&nbsp;underscores that Congress and the states are responsible for administering elections and any changes to voter documentation\u2014not the president. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Wyden and Merkley, Senators Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Angus King (I-Maine), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I) co-sponsored the bill, which was led by Sen.
