Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Utah\u2019s Senator Mike Lee introduced bipartisan legislation today that would advance responsible spending by ending production of the penny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Striking the penny has become increasingly costly, and the Make Sense Not Cents Act<\/em> would permanently eliminate this wasteful spending. Each penny costs nearly 4 cents to make\u2014a number that has risen more than 20 percent year-over-year due to the rising costs of materials\u2014and ending production of the penny could save the United States over $85 million annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the opposite of \u2018common cents\u2019 for taxpayers\u2019 dollars to fund wasteful spending like producing pennies,\u201d dijo Merkley.<\/strong> "El Make Sense Not Cents Act <\/em>will save taxpayers millions\u2014and that is something that both Democrats and Republicans support to seriously take on government waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMinting pennies costs the American taxpayer millions every year \u2013 nearly four times more than the pennies are worth,\u201d said Lee.<\/strong> \u201cNo private business would produce something at a 4x loss. It\u2019s time to stop wasting Americans\u2019 hard-earned tax dollars making overpriced pennies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Nearly two-thirds of pennies produced in the U.S. do not ever recirculate, meaning billions of pennies are buried in couch cushions, or simply lost, never to be used in transactions again. Further, in an era of online and digital banking, only 16 percent of transactions are made with cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades,\u00a0both\u00a0Republicans and Democrats alike have called to end the penny\u2019s production, including President Trump and former President Obama who said<\/a>, \u201canytime we’re spending more money on something that people don’t actually use, that’s an example of something we should probably change.\u201d The\u00a0Make Sense Not Cents Act\u00a0<\/em>is a straightforward solution to save Americans\u2019 hard-earned taxpayer dollars while keeping existing pennies in circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
