WASHINGTON DC <\/strong>\u2014 U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.)<\/strong>, a member of the Senate Finance Committee<\/strong>, Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee Ron Wyden (D-Ore.)<\/strong>, Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.)<\/strong>, y Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) <\/strong>today led the Senate Democratic Caucus in sending an open letter to the public exposing the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans\u2019 plan to gut Meals on Wheels, Head Start, and other essential social services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republican Senators are currently writing legislation that will give a tax break to the wealthiest by ripping away programs American seniors, children, and working families rely on. Republicans have targeted two essential funding sources for social services programs\u2014Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) \u2014putting nearly 25 million children, seniors, and families at risk across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe write to make our position on this legislation perfectly clear: Congress should not give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans by ripping away programs that almost 25 million Americans \u2013 close to 50% of whom are children \u2013 rely on for basic needs,\u201d the Senators wrote to the American public. <\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEarlier this month, Congressional Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate passed a budget that sets the stage for existential cuts to the safety net. Republican leaders claim they have no plans to eliminate essential services, but tens of billions in catastrophic cuts to these programs appeared on Republicans\u2019 published wish list<\/a>, alongside cuts to Medicaid and SNAP,\u201d the Senators continued<\/strong>. \u201cState and local leaders confirm that eliminating SSBG and TANF would reduce programs that serve our most vulnerable as states and localities are already operating under tight budget constraints.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Senators\u2019 letter concludes<\/strong>: \u201cRight now, Republicans are writing the most consequential legislation contemplated in decades entirely behind closed doors. That\u2019s because Trump and Congressional Republicans must hide the ugly truth \u2013 their legislation feeds corporate and wealthy individuals\u2019 greed by abandoning vulnerable children, starving seniors, and cutting off families in need.
