{"id":22367,"date":"2025-06-09T16:38:54","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T20:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=22367"},"modified":"2025-06-10T15:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T19:08:15","slug":"merkley-wyden-38-senators-fight-trumps-cuts-to-the-job-corps-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-wyden-38-senators-fight-trumps-cuts-to-the-job-corps-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley, Wyden y 38 senadores luchan contra los recortes de Trump al programa Job Corps"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>In Oregon, Tongue Point, PIVOT, and Springdale Centers at Risk<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 As the Trump Administration attempts to shutter the nation\u2019s largest jobs training program for low-income and at-risk young people, Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and 38 Senate colleagues demanded U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer reverse the illegal and unconstitutional cuts to the Job Corps program that are harming students and communities in Oregon and across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Administration\u2019s decision to illegally and abruptly terminate Job Corps center operations has left 25,000 students and thousands of staff across 99 Job Corps centers in the lurch,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>wrote the Senators in their letter to Secretary Chavez-DeRemer.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThe sudden \u2018pause\u2019 of operations at Job Corps centers puts young people\u2019s lives at risk, especially a significant number of students who were experiencing homelessness before arriving to the program. Local communities will pay a steep price, especially the thousands of individuals who work at the centers and will lose their livelihoods.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than 60 years, Job Corps has helped millions of young people in rural communities and cities alike to finish high school, learn technical skills and get good-paying jobs while providing stable housing, medical and mental health care, and other supportive services. Through Job Corps programs, young people receive the training they need to start in good-paying jobs that support their communities after graduation \u2013 including as wildland firefighters, nurses, electricians, machinists, pipefitters, and welders.
