{"id":22745,"date":"2025-07-29T10:28:47","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T14:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=22745"},"modified":"2025-07-29T10:45:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T14:45:17","slug":"merkley-cornyn-unveil-bipartisan-bill-to-defend-vulnerable-uyghurs-from-being-forcibly-returned-to-prc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-cornyn-unveil-bipartisan-bill-to-defend-vulnerable-uyghurs-from-being-forcibly-returned-to-prc\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley, Cornyn Unveil Bipartisan Bill to Defend Vulnerable Uyghurs from Being Forcibly Returned to PRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Texas\u2019 U.S. Senator John Cornyn today teamed up to introduce new bipartisan legislation to impose sanctions on foreign government officials involved in the&nbsp;forced deportation&nbsp;of Uyghurs and other at-risk&nbsp;individuals&nbsp;to the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El\u00a0<em>Preventing the Forced Return of Uyghurs Act<\/em>\u00a0follows\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uyghur-china-deportation-thailand-xinjiang-human-rights-7a05b58e7f552a3651b90d76a0899e92\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports from earlier this year<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0governments forcibly repatriating\u00a0Uyghurs to China, in direct violation of international law and\u00a0basic\u00a0human rights.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/05\/29\/world\/asia\/china-uyghur-xinjiang-labor-transfers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Further<\/a>\u00a0reporting has exposed the PRC\u2019s ongoing\u00a0abuses\u00a0of\u00a0Uyghurs, who remain subject\u00a0to the evils of slave\u00a0labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe forced return of Uyghurs to the PRC is a shameful violation of human rights, and the United States must be steadfast in calling out those foreign officials who capitulate to Beijing\u2019s coercion,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>dijo Merkley.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThe bipartisan&nbsp;<em>Preventing the Forced Return of Uyghurs Act&nbsp;<\/em>is a strong tool to hold&nbsp;these foreign officials&nbsp;accountable and&nbsp;reaffirm&nbsp;the United States\u2019 role as&nbsp;a global leader on&nbsp;dignity and freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Chinese Communist Party continues to wield its oppressive hand on religious and ethnic minorities, particularly Uyghurs, stripping them of basic human rights and subjecting them to concentration and re-education camps, starvation, torture, and disappearances,\u201d <strong>said Cornyn.<\/strong> \u201cAny foreign government official who forcibly returns Uyghurs or members of any religious or ethnic minority group to China \u2013 where they would face certain persecution and possibly death \u2013 should not be welcome in the United States, and I\u2019m proud to introduce this legislation to prevent those who are complicit from obtaining a visa or any other immigration benefit under our laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and past Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, Merkley has worked tirelessly to shine a light on&nbsp;repression by the Chinese government,&nbsp;including its targeting of Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, Tibetans, and other&nbsp;vulnerable groups.
