I will battle tooth and nail to ensure past protections in the&nbsp;<em>Ley de derecho al voto&nbsp;<\/em>are restored, and to expand access to the ballot box by nationalizing Oregon\u2019s proven system of vote-by-mail.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cTime and time again, John Lewis put his own life on the line to speak up for every American\u2019s right to vote. To honor him and everyone who has fought for the right to vote, we must pass the&nbsp;<em>John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act<\/em>,\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>dijo Merkley.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cWe won\u2019t sit idly by as Republicans chip away at the&nbsp;<em>Ley de derecho al voto<\/em>, and while so many Americans \u00ad\u2013 particularly minority communities, less affluent Americans, and Tribal members \u2013continue to face voter suppression. Congress must protect the right to vote so everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in our democracy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>El\u00a0<em>John R. Lewis Voting Advancement Act<\/em>\u00a0would strengthen our democracy by reestablishing preclearance for jurisdictions with a pattern of voting rights violations, protecting minority communities subject to discriminatory voting practices, and defending election workers from threats and intimidation. It is named in honor of voting rights champion and former Georgia Congressman John Lewis. This legislation is especially relevant in Texas where, following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/most-u-s-adults-think-the-gop-tax-bill-will-help-the-wealthy-and-harm-the-poor-ap-norc-poll-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">historic disapproval<\/a>\u00a0of congressional Republicans\u2019 tax bill, Texas state lawmakers are scheming to add five additional Republican districts. The move comes in direct response to Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-republicans-congress-redistricting-gerrymandering-texas-cb63c6b0102bc45a11515c6b33efc697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fears<\/a>\u00a0that voters may flip the House in the 2026 midterm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s damaging Shelby County decision in 2013\u2014which crippled the federal government\u2019s ability under the&nbsp;<em>Ley de derecho al voto de 1965<\/em>&nbsp;to prevent discriminatory changes to voting laws and procedures\u2014states have unleashed a torrent of voter suppression laws. The Supreme Court\u2019s decision in&nbsp;<em>Brnovich v Democratic National Committee<\/em>&nbsp;delivered yet another blow to the<em>&nbsp;Ley de derecho al voto<\/em>&nbsp;by making it significantly harder for plaintiffs to win lawsuits under the landmark law against discriminatory voting laws or procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation was introduced by U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Cory Booker, D-N.J. and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.
