Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley released\u00a0the following statement after Senate Republicans again blocked consideration of his\u00a0Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe American people want and deserve transparency\u2014but Senate Republicans are once again blocking justice. The rich and powerful must be held accountable for using their influence, money, and connections to cover up the abuse of our most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis morning, I was joined by Senators Wyden, Van Hollen, Durbin, and Blumenthal as we made several attempts to take up and pass immediately my bill to provide the public with the truth about Jeffrey Epstein and his horrific crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur government serves \u2018We the People,\u2019 not \u2018We the Powerful.\u2019 To restore the public\u2019s trust in government, we must shine a light on the truth surrounding Jeffrey Epstein and those connected to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRelease the damn files.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Merkley teamed up with New Mexico\u2019s U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n to lead 24 other Senators\u2014including Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)\u2014to\u00a0introduce the\u00a0Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The bill would direct the U.S. Department of Justice to publicly release all files relating to the investigation of Jeffrey Epstein and his associates, providing full transparency for the American people, accountability for individuals involved with Epstein, and justice for all victims harmed.\u00a0It also\u00a0includes strong protections to redact appropriate information to protect victims\u2019 privacy and national security, while explicitly prohibiting redactions based on reputational harm or political sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
