{"id":23019,"date":"2025-09-15T13:59:29","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T17:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=23019"},"modified":"2025-09-15T17:09:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T21:09:53","slug":"wyden-merkley-introduce-tax-fairness-bill-for-striking-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/wyden-merkley-introduce-tax-fairness-bill-for-striking-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyden, Merkley Introduce Tax Fairness Bill for Striking Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Washington DC<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley (both D-OR) said today they have introduced legislation that would ensure workers in Oregon and nationwide are not taxed on the small stipends they receive while on strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAmericans battling for fair wages, working conditions and benefits count on strike funds from their union to keep providing food, shelter and more for their families,\u201d <strong>said Wyden, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee. <\/strong>\u201cThis bill provides a fair shake for those workers by making sure they don\u2019t face a financial punishment come tax time just for having exercised their right to strike for a better future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs the son of a union machinist, I saw firsthand the difference a strong union can make in delivering the fair wages and robust workplace protections that every worker deserves,\u201d\u00a0<strong>dijo Merkley. <\/strong>\u201cWe need legislation like the <em>Tax Cut for Striking Workers Act<\/em> to make sure union workers can strike without facing a double tax penalty for exercising their rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>When workers go on strike, they may receive a small stipend to help cover some of their lost wages, usually paid from a strike fund set up by the union. Strike fund payments can vary by union but are usually just a few hundred dollars a week.
