Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley today denounced Senate Republicans for blocking<\/a> su resolution with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)<\/a> to force President Trump to immediately use all congressionally approved funding to keep families from going hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump has a new MAHA strategy\u2014the \u2018Make America Hungry Agenda\u2019\u2014using food as a weapon to inflict harm on vulnerable kids, seniors, and families across America. It\u2019s wrong on every level,\u201d dijo Merkley<\/strong>. \u201cLast month, the Trump Administration indicated it had the authority to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during a government shutdown using an emergency fund appropriated by Congress. Rather than follow the law, Trump decided to use America\u2019s most vulnerable families as political pawns and removed the policy from the Agriculture Department\u2019s website. Children, seniors, and vulnerable families are not bargaining chips\u2014they are Americans who rely on this critical program.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Merkley continued, <\/strong>\u201cNow, the Trump Administration is claiming it will only fund half of SNAP benefits in November and that funds wouldn\u2019t be delivered\u2014in its own words\u2014for \u2018a few weeks to up to several months.\u2019 This is outrageous\u2014the President needs to use both the full authority of the contingency funds and the interchange authority to fully fund SNAP benefits for November, so families and kids don\u2019t starve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, October 31, two federal district courts ruled that President Trump was obligated to provide SNAP benefits via contingency funds, but earlier today, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Under Secretary of Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Patrick A. Penn said in a\u00a0court filing<\/a>\u00a0that the agency would utilize its contingency funds but \u201cUSDA\u2019s understanding is that the system changes States must implement to provide the reduced benefit amounts will take anywhere from a few weeks to up to several months.\u201d He also said that the contingency fund totals about $4.65 billion, which will only fund half of SNAP for November, and the Administration would not use interchange authority to spend Section 32 tariff revenue to fully fund SNAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After nutrition assistance from SNAP for roughly 42 million Americans was stopped on November 1 due to the ongoing Republican-led government shutdown, Senate Republicans blocked Merkley and Schumer\u2019s resolution and failed to take further action to protect critical nutrition assistance for families nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
