{"id":23424,"date":"2025-12-03T10:30:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T15:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=23424"},"modified":"2026-03-11T13:28:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:28:37","slug":"merkley-murkowski-lujan-massie-khanna-demand-doj-briefing-on-release-of-the-epstein-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-murkowski-lujan-massie-khanna-demand-doj-briefing-on-release-of-the-epstein-files\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley, Murkowski, Luj\u00e1n, Massie, Khanna Demand DOJ Briefing on Release of the Epstein Files"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Senate and House sponsors of Epstein Files Transparency Act lead the charge to ensure law is fully implemented.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n (D-NM) joined forces with U.S. Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) to call on Attorney General Pam Bondi to provide a briefing on the U.S. Department of Justice\u2019s efforts to comply with the <em>Epstein Files Transparency Act <\/em>and fully release the Epstein Files by December 19, 2025\u2014as required by the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley, Murkowski, Luj\u00e1n, Massie, and Khanna\u2019s letter comes as the Justice Department is legally required to release all the Epstein Files within the law\u2019s 30-day requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe write as the bipartisan lead sponsors of the <em>Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/em> to express our shared interest in supporting the Department of Justice\u2019s efforts to carry out the provisions of this critical new law,\u201d <strong>the bipartisan group of lawmakers wrote.<\/strong> \u201cIn light of the short 30 day deadline to release the Epstein Files, we are particularly focused on understanding the contents of any new evidence, information or procedural hurdles that could interfere with the Department\u2019s ability meet this statutory deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>They demanded,<\/strong> \u201cIn the interest of transparency and clarity on the steps required to faithfully implement the <em>Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/em>, we request a briefing either in a classified or unclassified setting, to discuss the full contents of this new information in your possession at your convenience, but not later than Friday, December 5, 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/merkley-lujan-praise-senate-passage-of-epstein-files-transparency-act-to-restore-publics-trust-and-deliver-justice-for-epsteins-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overwhelmingly passed Congress<\/a> and was signed into law by President Trump on November 19, 2025. The landmark transparency legislation includes strong protections to redact appropriate information to protect victims\u2019 privacy and national security, while explicitly prohibiting redactions based on reputational harm or political sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn addition, we underscore that protecting survivors\u2019 privacy is central to the law\u2019s intent. We share concerns about the Department\u2019s ability to accurately identify and redact victims\u2019 names. The victim\u2019s lawyers have far greater knowledge of who these individuals are, and they are prepared to confidentially transmit names that must be redacted to prevent privacy violations. In light of the short 30 day deadline to release the Epstein Files, we are particularly focused on understanding the contents of any new evidence, information or procedural hurdles that could interfere with the Department\u2019s ability meet this statutory deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 7, 2025, the Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation published a memo outlining conclusions from an \u201cexhaustive review of the investigative holdings relating to Jeffrey Epstein.\u201d This memo confirmed that the Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation \u201cdid not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 14, 2025, the Department of Justice announced that Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, would initiate new investigations into connections between Jeffrey Epstein and former President Bill Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and a prominent investor, Reid Hoffman.
