{"id":23431,"date":"2025-12-04T10:44:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T15:44:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=23431"},"modified":"2025-12-04T10:44:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T15:44:27","slug":"merkley-kaine-no-funds-for-war-against-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-kaine-no-funds-for-war-against-venezuela\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley, Kaine: No Funds for War Against Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Virginia\u2019s U.S. Senator Tim Kaine today teamed up to introduce the&nbsp;<em>Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act of 2025<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Venezuela&nbsp;without explicit&nbsp;Congressional authorization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCongress cannot stand by while Donald Trump wages war without authorization,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>dijo Merkley.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cNicol\u00e1s Maduro is a brutal dictator, but that does not provide justification for the Trump Administration to ignore U.S. law to carry out these unconstitutional military strikes. Donald Trump cannot be trusted, and we must say no to another endless war, reckless regime change, and lethal operations\u2014which are essentially extrajudicial killings\u2014and do nothing to make the American people safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t stumble into an unnecessary war with Venezuela\u2014risking U.S. servicemembers\u2019 lives\u2014with no congressional authorization and incomplete information about the Administration\u2019s objectives, its legal rationale, and the potential consequences of a long-term conflict that could drive migration and irreparably fracture Venezuela,\u201d <strong>dijo Kaine.<\/strong> \u201cThis legislation would prevent us from doing that, and I urge my colleagues to support it and reclaim the solemn responsibilities on matters of war and peace assigned to Congress by the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley and Kaine\u2019s bill does not prevent the United States from acting to defend itself or its citizens from an armed attack or threat of an imminent armed attack, pursue lawful counternarcotics operations, or provide humanitarian assistance to the Venezuelan people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El <em>Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act of 2025<\/em>&nbsp;is also co-sponsored by Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Trump Administration has amassed the largest naval buildup in the Caribbean in decades and committed extrajudicial killings in international waters amounting either to murder or war crimes. Congress has not authorized this Administration to take these offensive actions, and with good reason \u2013 the American people do not want to start another war. We must put a stop to this by passing this simple measure to prevent U.S. taxpayer dollars from funding the Trump Administration\u2019s manufactured conflict with Venezuela,\u201d <strong>dijo Van Hollen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>During the first Trump Administration, Merkley introduced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-introduces-resolution-to-prevent-military-intervention-in-venezuela-without-explicit-congressional-authorization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Senate resolution<\/a>\u00a0prohibiting military action in Venezuela.
