{"id":23716,"date":"2026-01-14T20:53:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T01:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=23716"},"modified":"2026-01-14T20:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T01:53:20","slug":"merkley-senate-fails-to-stand-up-to-trumps-unconstitutional-strikes-against-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-senate-fails-to-stand-up-to-trumps-unconstitutional-strikes-against-venezuela\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley:\u00a0Senate Fails to Stand\u00a0Up\u00a0to\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0Unconstitutional\u00a0Strikes Against Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley&nbsp;\u2014a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee\u2014today&nbsp;released\u202fthe following statement after&nbsp;the Senate voted&nbsp;to block&nbsp;U.S. Senator Tim Kaine&nbsp;(D-VA)\u2019s&nbsp;War Powers Resolutionaimed at stopping unauthorized U.S. military action in Venezuela:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Trump Administration has repeatedly misled the American people about its plans for Venezuela, sending our nation down a dangerous path.&nbsp;The Administration has&nbsp;failed to provide many of the answers Congress is rightfully owed&nbsp;and&nbsp;made clear&nbsp;it has&nbsp;no plan to ensure the will of the Venezuelan people is honored,&nbsp;or that power is transferred to legitimate&nbsp;democratic&nbsp;leadership.&nbsp;The continued lack of honesty should outrage all of us, but instead of standing up to Trump, Senate Republicans blocked yet another attempt to rein in our warmonger president.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cThere is no clear path forward, no timeline, and no explanation of how the&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;Administration intends to avoid further instability or escalation.&nbsp;Instead, the Administration&nbsp;appears to be&nbsp;prioritizing profits for Big Oil over democracy and the rule of law.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cIn the face of&nbsp;Trump\u2019s&nbsp;stonewalling and recklessness,&nbsp;it is&nbsp;our&nbsp;constitutional responsibility&nbsp;to prevent the&nbsp;United States&nbsp;from being&nbsp;pulled into another open-ended war. We must not&nbsp;continue to&nbsp;fail this test.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Previamente,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/senate-republicans-block-merkleys-bill-to-prevent-war-with-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merkley&nbsp;took to the Senate Floor in an attempt to pass his\u202f<em>Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act of 2025<\/em><\/a>, legislation he leads with&nbsp;Senator Kaine,&nbsp;that would prohibit the use of federal funds for any use of military force in or against Venezuela without explicit Congressional authorization. Merkley\u2019s bill does not prevent the United States from acting to defend itself or its citizens from an armed attack or threat of an imminent armed attack, pursue lawful counternarcotics operations, or provide humanitarian&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;to the Venezuelan people.&nbsp;Senate Republicans&nbsp;ultimately blocked&nbsp;Merkley\u2019s&nbsp;bill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about the&nbsp;<em>Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act of 2025<\/em>, including the full text of the legislation, click&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-kaine-no-funds-for-war-against-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley also&nbsp;partnered&nbsp;with&nbsp;Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49)&nbsp;to&nbsp;introduce the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/rep-levin-sen-merkley-introduce-new-bill-to-prevent-taxpayer-dollars-from-reimbursing-oil-companies-in-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Protecting Taxpayers from Risky Investments in Venezuela Act<\/em><\/a>.
