Washington DC -<\/b> Los senadores estadounidenses Ron Wyden y Jeff Merkley se unieron hoy a sus colegas de la costa oeste en el Senado para solicitar detalles al Servicio Geol\u00f3gico de EE. UU. (USGS) sobre planes futuros y necesidades de financiamiento para el sistema de alerta temprana de terremotos (EEW) de la costa oeste.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespu\u00e9s de a\u00f1os de un fuerte apoyo a nivel estatal y del Congreso, nos complace ver que el sistema EEW ha avanzado hasta tener casi el 70 por ciento de las estaciones s\u00edsmicas instaladas y activas en toda la costa oeste\u201d. <\/b>escribieron los senadores en una carta al Director Asociado de Riesgos Naturales del USGS, Dr. Dave Applegate. \u201cComo todos sabemos, no se trata de \u201csi\u201d sino de \u201ccu\u00e1ndo\u201d ocurrir\u00e1 el pr\u00f3ximo gran terremoto. Por lo tanto, es esencial que completemos la construcci\u00f3n del sistema EEW lo m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido posible y nos aseguremos de que su infraestructura y operaciones sean lo suficientemente s\u00f3lidas para brindar un beneficio significativo de seguridad p\u00fablica a nuestros constituyentes\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Los sistemas de alerta temprana de terremotos est\u00e1n destinados a dar segundos vitales antes de que se sienta el temblor, lo que permite a las personas protegerse, detener las cirug\u00edas en curso y detener el transporte p\u00fablico para mantener a los pasajeros seguros. Con fondos federales y asociaciones con universidades y otras organizaciones, el Sistema de alerta temprana de terremotos ShakeAlert<\/a> ahora est\u00e1 disponible en Oreg\u00f3n, California y Washington. El sistema es una red de sensores que recopila y comparte informaci\u00f3n en tiempo real sobre la magnitud, la ubicaci\u00f3n y el temblor esperado de los terremotos en la costa oeste a los socios de distribuci\u00f3n que luego env\u00edan alertas a trav\u00e9s de tel\u00e9fonos celulares e Internet.<\/p>\n
