Washington DC<\/strong> \u2013 U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today joined 27 colleagues in calling on the Supreme Court to protect birthright citizenship by striking down Donald Trump\u2019s unconstitutional attempts to roll back a 150-year-old precedent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cChildren born in this country have only called the United States their home, and they are no different than any other U.S. citizen,\u201d Wyden said. \u201cThe Supreme Court must uphold the U.S. Constitution and long-settled precedent to stop Donald Trump\u2019s fascist fever dream from ripping away the citizenship of children born in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe Constitution is clear:\u00a0every child born in the United States is an American citizen.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0critical that\u00a0the Supreme Court\u00a0uphold this promise,\u201d\u00a0Merkley said. \u201cThe\u00a014el<\/sup>\u00a0Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship, and more than a century of Supreme Court precedent backs it up. Instead of\u00a0endorsing\u00a0a haphazard, patchwork approach, in\u00a0which\u00a0citizenship\u00a0depends on the Trump Administration\u2019s whims and not the Constitution, the Court must reaffirm this fundamental\u00a0principle.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

En Trump v Barbara<\/em><\/a>, Wyden and Merkley signed an amicus curiae breve<\/a>, underscoring that Trump\u2019s executive order to strip automatic citizenship from children born in the United States violates the Constitution, more than a century of Supreme Court rulings, and laws enacted by Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amicus brief was led by U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
