{"id":24060,"date":"2026-02-26T10:08:52","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=24060"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:08:54","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:08:54","slug":"merkley-condemns-hong-kong-court-sentencing-pro-democracy-advocates-father","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-condemns-hong-kong-court-sentencing-pro-democracy-advocates-father\/","title":{"rendered":"Merkley Condemns Hong Kong Court Sentencing Pro-Democracy Advocate\u2019s Father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, D.C. \u2013 Today, Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley\u2014a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and past Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC)\u2014issued a statement following the sentencing of Kwok Yin-sang, the father of U.S.-based activist Anna Kwok, who was put on trial in Hong Kong after Anna spoke out against Beijing\u2019s crackdown in Hong Kong:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cThe United States must never back down in the face of China\u2019s campaign of global repression. Kwok Yin-sang\u2019s cruel sentencing is the latest act of the Chinese government reaching across borders to silence dissent, wherever it appears. He was put through a sham trial\u2014via a Hong Kong court acting on China\u2019s behalf\u2014because his daughter Anna spoke out against Beijing\u2019s abuse of the basic rights of Hong Kongers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Chinese and Hong Kong governments\u2019 coordinated crackdown on free speech and the rule of law makes clear that Beijing\u2019s goal is forced control of the people of Hong Kong. As long as this repression continues, the U.S. cannot allow China to rely on institutions such as Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices (HKETOs) to enable intimidation and surveillance on American soil.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cOne part of holding China accountable is to pass my bipartisan&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-sullivan-curtis-kaine-push-for-bipartisan-crackdown-on-chinese-government-controlled-hong-kong-economic-and-trade-offices-in-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) Certification&nbsp;Act<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, which would require the State Department to certify whether HKETOs should continue to receive diplomatic privileges in the United States. While HKETOs nominally promote business and trade, in reality, they are outposts of repression as China has shredded any meaningful liberty that Hong Kong once had. <\/strong><strong>Republicans and Democrats must be unequivocal that there will be consequences for Beijing&#8217;s destruction of Hong Kong\u2019s autonomy. We stand with Hong Kongers across the globe as they fight for their rights and their future.\u201d<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As past Chair of the CECC and a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Merkley has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cecc.gov\/events\/hearings\/one-city-two-legal-systems-political-prisoners-and-the-erosion-of-the-rule-of-law-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led the charge to spotlight<\/a> China not just silencing people inside Hong Kong but engaging in transnational repression by going after their families overseas.
