NSF\u2019s decision came after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-murkowski-lead-the-charge-to-block-the-dismantling-of-one-of-a-kind-ocean-monitoring-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merkley and Murkowski passed a Senate bill<\/a> to pause the dismantling and pressed NSF to preserve the OOI sensors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cI teamed up with Senator Murkowski to lead an \u2018SOS\u2019 call\u2014Save Ocean Sensors\u2014and the Senate unanimously approved our bipartisan bill to defend the vital Ocean Observatories Initiative. Now, the National Science Foundation has reversed course and agreed to preserve the OOI\u2019s critical sensors that provide essential data for managing our fisheries, forecasting weather, and understanding climate change,\u201d <\/strong>dijo Merkley. <strong>\u201cWe\u2019ll keep fighting to ensure scientists, fishermen, and coastal communities can continue to utilize the critical data the OOI provides.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cNational Science Foundation\u2019s decision to leave the OOI buoys in place is a massive win for coastal communities and fishermen around the country,\u201d<\/strong> dijo Murkowski. <strong>\u201cThe data accessed through OOI is a gamechanger for so many, and I\u2019m immensely grateful that NSF listened to our calls. Today we saw the federal process at work\u2014with Congress advocating and the Executive taking decisive action. I\u2019m pleased to have partnered with Senator Merkley and a number of my colleagues to get this across the finish line.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, Merkley and Murkowski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-murkowski-lead-the-charge-to-block-the-dismantling-of-one-of-a-kind-ocean-monitoring-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secured Senate passage of their bipartisan <em>Saving the OOI Act<\/em><\/a>, a simple two-page bill that says no federal funds shall be used to decommission the OOI system until the NSF conducts a thorough review and assessment of the network with robust stakeholder engagement. The\u00a0<em>Saving the OOI Act<\/em>\u00a0is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Jack Reed (D-RI), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Patty Murray (D-WA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Edward J.
