{"id":24948,"date":"2026-06-22T12:03:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T16:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=24948"},"modified":"2026-06-24T19:14:03","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T23:14:03","slug":"at-town-halls-across-the-state-oregonians-tell-merkley-that-the-ultra-wealthy-need-to-pay-more-to-save-social-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/at-town-halls-across-the-state-oregonians-tell-merkley-that-the-ultra-wealthy-need-to-pay-more-to-save-social-security\/","title":{"rendered":"At Town Halls Across the State, Oregonians Tell Merkley That the Ultra Wealthy Need to Pay More to Save Social Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><em>Merkley Polled Attendees at His Recent Town Halls in Each of Oregon\u2019s 36 Counties on Their Views of How to Prevent Social Security from Going Insolvent<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><em>As of 2025, Nearly <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/policy\/docs\/factsheets\/cong_stats\/2025\/or.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>965,000 Oregonians<\/em><\/a><em> Receive Social Security Benefits<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8211; Today, Oregon\u2019s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the results of a poll given to attendees at his recent town hall meetings across Oregon asking them what steps they would like the federal government to take to ensure Social Security remains solvent and available throughout their retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was significant agreement by folks at Merkley\u2019s town halls on several courses of action:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ninety-four percent of respondents felt that the wealthy should pay Social Security premiums on more of their income, including 83 percent who felt the cap income subject to Social Security premiums should be repealed entirely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On delivering benefits, 64 percent agreed that Social Security benefits for the wealthiest Americans should be reduced.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than half of respondents felt that the Social Security tax should apply to investment income for high-earners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There was substantial opposition to several strategies including raising the retirement age and reducing Social Security benefits for all.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between Oregon\u2019s counties that voted for President Donald Trump and counties that voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris, there was virtually no difference in respondents\u2019 choices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.budget.senate.gov\/ranking-member\/newsroom\/press\/merkley-responds-to-trustees-reports-that-big-ugly-betrayal-law-moves-up-insolvency-dates-for-social-security-medicare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released their annual reports<\/a> showing that Social Security\u2019s Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund\u2019s insolvency date moved up one quarter to late 2032 thanks in part to the passage of the Republican\u2019s <em>One Big, Beautiful Bill Act<\/em> that passed last July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cOregonians are extremely concerned that Social Security Trust Fund will run out of money within a few years. They are extremely supportive of taking concrete actions now. I will do everything I can in the Senate to push for a substantive debate now and hopefully Senate passage of Social Security reforms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cSocial Security is an intergenerational promise, and we must ensure that no American has their benefits cut by the Trust Fund running out of money. It\u2019s wiser to address this challenge now and not wait until the Trust Fund goes belly up,\u201d <\/strong>dijo Merkley.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Social Security payroll tax is a mandatory federal contribution that funds the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund. The current tax rate is 12.4 percent, split evenly between the employer and the employee. It is assessed on wage and salary earnings up to an annual cap of $184,500, meaning someone making a million dollars would <a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.net\/publications\/millionaires-stop-contributing-to-social-security-on-march-2-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stop paying into Social Security by the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.net\/publications\/millionaires-stop-contributing-to-social-security-on-march-2-2024\/\">beginning of March<\/a> each year, while working families are on the hook all year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Merkley\u2019s town hall meetings across the state, over 1,800 residents responded to the Social Security poll. Additional details on the results are below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" src=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/image.jpg 697w, https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*respondents could select more than one option<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few wanted to raise the retirement age, reduce benefits across the board, or borrow money to invest in the stock market.
