{"id":25130,"date":"2026-07-29T16:56:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T20:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/?p=25130"},"modified":"2026-07-29T16:58:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T20:58:17","slug":"wyden-merkley-sound-alarm-on-usda-rural-development-reorganization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/wyden-merkley-sound-alarm-on-usda-rural-development-reorganization\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyden, Merkley Sound Alarm on USDA Rural Development Reorganization\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Washington, D.C.\u2014<\/em><\/strong>U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley today said they joined their Senate Democratic colleagues Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and Peter Welch, D-Vt., Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy, and Credit, in raising strong concerns about the Trump administration\u2019s plan to reorganize the Rural Development mission area at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cRural Development is a unique division within the Department, supporting agriculture and ensuring that rural communities prosper by administering grants and loans to support rural businesses, providing financial support for rural housing, financing the construction of rural health clinics and daycare centers, and championing critical infrastructure projects for water, electric, or broadband,\u201d <\/strong>the senators wrote to USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden. <strong>\u201cRural communities, small businesses, and families will lose access to important services if the proposed reorganization plan moves forward.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This reorganization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.senate.gov\/newsroom\/dem\/press\/release\/klobuchar-welch-colleagues-raise-concerns-about-usda-rural-development-reorganization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will force 60% <\/a>of the Rural Development National Capital Region staff to relocate to St. Louis or Dallas by October 2026 or resign.
