Oregonians are facing yet another deadly fire season this year, and it is essential that our communities have all the necessary tools to respond to wildfires and smoke-related threats,\u201d <\/strong>dijo Merkley.<strong> \u201cOur bill helps communities plan for and cope with hazardous air quality caused by wildfire smoke, which threatens public health, disrupts daily life, and shows just how devastating climate chaos-fueled fires can be.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley cosponsored the <em>Wildfire Air Quality Sensor Expansion Act<\/em>\u2014led by U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV)\u2014that would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to create and expand new and existing grant and loan programs allowing agencies to purchase and operate portable air sensors. Portable air sensors are a low-cost technology that can measure and detect harmful pollutants caused by wildfire smoke. Increasing access to air quality information will help leaders make better decisions for public health and wildfire response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merkley has been a longtime leader in the fight to prepare for and mitigate the worst impacts of wildfires. He leads a series of bills to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-sheehy-unveil-new-bipartisan-effort-to-boost-rural-economies-wildfire-resiliency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support mills processing hazardous fuels coming off public lands<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-daines-salinas-guthrie-hoyle-champion-bipartisan-bill-to-train-next-generation-of-wildland-firefighters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">train the new generation of wildland firefighters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-marshall-launch-new-bipartisan-effort-to-unlock-federal-support-for-hazardous-cleanup-following-wildfires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aid toxic debris cleanup following wildfires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-crapo-lead-bipartisan-effort-to-expand-collaborative-forest-landscape-restoration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bolster collaborative forest management,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-hyde-smith-bentz-thompson-launch-new-bipartisan-effort-to-promote-renewable-fuels-boost-wildfire-resiliency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promote renewable fuels to boost wildfire resiliency<\/a>, y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkley.senate.gov\/es\/merkley-curtis-lead-bipartisan-wildfire-emissions-prevention-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">streamline the use of prescribed burns<\/a>.
