Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley are calling on the Federal Communications Commission to boost its Lifeline program, which they say will keep students connected as millions of children are returning to school both virtually and in person. A release said since 1995, the FCC’s Lifeline program has made basic internet and telephone service more affordable for low-income Americans and has had bi-partisan support. A letter from Wyden, Merkley and 23 other senators said, “As millions of American families face unprecedented challenges, we urge the FCC to reverse proposed changes to the Lifeline program, take immediate steps to open its assistance to more hospitals and ensure that its services meet the pressing needs of families during this crisis”.
